He is a good player, just being way overpaid. I throught trading him was not an option because no team would take him. I would have given him away for free just to offload his contract.

Just sad that we are paying all this money to guys who aren't performing for us, and we let Buckner go.....stupid stupid stupid.
He'll never play a down for us.
wow, is this true??
is this similar to the OWENS trade when we literally gave him away for free ?
We are getting a cap relief and a 5th round pick in 2022 so it's a very good deal. We just have to take on one of their pieces of baggage as well, but he probably be gone next year.

I would think so. He's a 30 year old LB with at least one ACL tear in his career. This was a salary dump. Injury settlement wouldn't shock me.

But Paarag??
When the cap is expected to decrease for next season, there's only so much maneuvering that can be done. Odds are good that the Saints cut Kwon after the season is over and this is just a rental for them.
Agreed.

Is the dead cap hit for this trade really 10+ million in 2021?

This trade is a great deal for the Niners...they get rid of an overpaid, under-performing LB, get Alonso and a conditional 5th rd pick in the next draft. Alexander's already been removed from the Niners on Spotrac, so I couldn't see what his cap hit was for this season and next. Suffice it to say Paraag will have cap room to consumate extensions for Warner and likely Juszczyk. Those are two guys who're absolutely mainstay keys to their squads and have earned paydays. There should also be some even bigger fish to fry WRT cap cuts among Jimmy G ($26.9), Ford $20,785M & Richburg $11.5M. This deal is a very good start toward cutting/trading some guys who're again, overpaid and under-performing. Or, in Richburg's case, MIA due to recurring injuries.

Im glad to see him go as he was on the top of my list of players we need to part with by next off season. Ford, Richburg, Pettis, and Ward need to go as well. Need as much cap space to re-sign players and fill in the major holes in vital starting positions next year. This was the year that we were trying to keep as much of last years team together to try for another run, but it didnt work out, time for rebuild mode.

Logical move given the situation and Greenlaw imo.

So strictly cap wise, does it help to trade a player other than just cut him like we did in this situation?

When we got him, I was stoked. Dude came out balling. But he hasn't been the same since the injury. And I try to not see him miss tackles because I like him
Green law has outplayed him. For a fraction of the price. We get a salary dump and a pick when we desperately need some. And I've always liked Kiko. Even if he does just ST, he's a solid backup. Very athletic
But this is a solid solid trade for both sides. I say B to a B+ trade and if it becomes a 4th then it's an A-

I believe it was mentioned the move will save us 6.1 million against the cap next year.

I hope Shanalynch learn from their mistakes, this is a first step but much more must come before 2021 season

Sucks this had to be done, but it had to be done. The reality is that sometimes you give money to the wrong guy, or to a guy who ends up ultimately not being right for the team.

Well this came to fruition fast, though I was wrong about it being a bad team. Maybe the Saints are just going all in this year. Can't be much sand left in the hour glass on Drew Brees's career.
