Ford would cost $14.3M in dead money next year. Richburg $6.9M if he retires.

We can't afford either of them to retire. What we need is for them to be playing and earning their money.

And Tartt. Go with Moore, Harris, Cyprien, and Mayden.

Yup this is what happened when Luke Kuechly retired

"When an NFL player retires, all of the dead money on their contract counts against the current year's salary cap. As far as the salary cap goes, player retirement is treated the same as if a player were cut or traded by the team. Any non-dead money is forfeit upon retirement and does not count against the team's cap, but the dead money remains.

Because he chose to retire, Luke Kuechly's cap hit in 2020 will be slightly north of $11.8 million ($11,845,028 to be exact). After the 2020 season, Kuechly will be off the team's books completely. While the non-money side of Kuechly's retirement (the emotion, the play on the field, etc.) certainly sucks, it actually works out in Carolina's favor financially. If he were still on the roster in 2020, Kuechly would count slightly over $15.5 million ($15,512,573 to be exact) against the team's salary cap. But because he retired, the Panthers will end up saving a little over $3.6 million in cap space this year ($3,667,545 to be exact)."

In fact he's much better than Kiko Alonso (who ran a 4.74 40) as a pass defender. So I see this as pass-rush help and cap off-loading, because I simply don't see how Kiko helps us otherwise.

Oh make no mistake this was a salary dump.

This. Lets hand the position over to Moore. He looked like a missile out there against the Patriots. Made sound tackles and was always around the ball. Lets give him the experience he needs to gain more football IQ
Kwon was flat-out outplayed by Greenlaw. There was no need to keep his hulking salary. I get that he was a leader and some will be upset, but long-term, we can't afford to keep everyone, and the best players need to be on the field.

His weakness was missed tackles. He had excellent speed but was prone to overrunning players or coming in too hard and not wrapping up.

This was a salary dump for next year.

Yep. No way, no how could you justify paying Kwon 15-16 mil next season and restructuring the contract again would been a massive mistake. Get what you can for him and in the meantime allow Greenlaw to flourish as the will linebacker.

Jonny Sunshine here. Ugh. Okay, I have more hope with Richburg, not Ford

I'm actually surprised Lynch was able to get a 5th. Saints had to understand that the 49ers main motive was to clear cap.
