Another reason to think trade won't happen: If the 49ers were eying a move that got them into the 1st round you'd think we would have heard about them meeting -- in person, zoom, etc. -- with potential first rounders. If they did, they did a masterful job keeping it a secret.

Former NFL GM Rick Spielman tells @MaggieGray and I that logistically a Deebo Samuel to Jets trade tonight is highly doubtful b/c of logistics. Deebo has to pass a physical ... if he didn't pass, that pick is already going to be made. @MaggieandPerl

I think the chances of Deebo holding out are .005% it makes ZERO sense financially for him to do so.
Aaaaaand then his career takes a severe nose dive and he loses possibly 30-50mil over his lifetime. Makes no sense. Who is going to pay Deebo 25m+ if he sits for the majority of a second season in his first 4 years? (EDIT: 2 out of 4 years with season ending injuries)
Scenario 1: we don't resign or trade him and he gets mysterious injury. We let him go to free agency and he'll either A have to sign a prove it deal or B sign something dramatically lower than what we would've offered him this off-season.
Scenario 2: we don't sign or trade him and he kills it this year. Next year he gets franchised, gets the trade he wants and then signs a massive contract.
Scenario 3: we get a "nobody would trade that for deebo" offer
Scenario 4: we sign him and everybody lives happily ever after

That is true. I think a lot of people have been traded on draft day. So you definitely can do it. Maybe you would just wave the physical aspect in the trade. But I can't remember the last time a player was traded for a first-round pick on draft day. Can anyone else?

Yet for some reason, there will be many on this board upset that we didn't get rid of one of our best players.

Of course we are better with Deebo now
... but soon (if we draft well) we would be better without Deebo but with #10 + #35 + #38 plus another player plus $25 million to sign other free agents

This fixation on Jimmy G is incredible. You again dip into the emotional with the "bad karma" quip. So, if I may, it is okay for Deebo to want his bag, but not for Jimmy to protect his? And, for that matter, for the Niners to want to rationally solve this thing in the due course of time?
I know you were asking an overly emotional/irrational poster and not me, but I am going to answer.
Yes, its okay for Deebo to want his bag....but its less okay for Jimmy to want to protect his. He has already secured his bag. And he did so before proving much of anything. He has his bag. He will be getting another one, albeit a substantially smaller one if his market remains close to non-existent like it currently is. Deebo wanting to be paid isnt f**king the organization over. Either we pay him and he is here or we trade him and get a nice haul in return. That is not the same thing as Jimmy. He should have been cut already, but we for some reason are holding onto this hope that his market will actually develop after his rehab is completed. I just dont see it.
Steve, before I responded, I feel, you and I, need a bag. Can we get one?![]()
Either way we slice it, they both have a right to their positions. Jimmy to hold on to his, Deebo to want his. Right? I agree, the Niners overplayed "the Jimmy" story. But I find it reasonable that Jimmy, whether it is this bag or the next bag, sought to protect his position and get surgery. Emotionally, it is frustrating. But I get it. It is a logical thing to do.
Time will tell, but you may be right about Jimmy. We may have to cut him. But we certainly could trade him still...maybe for a....wait for it...bag.
Yes we need the bag too! Haha
The frustrating thing about Jimmy protecting his money is that he was taking a chance too. We easily could have cut him and he wouldnt have gotten his money anyway. Some, myself included, feel like that should have happened already. So him delaying his surgery potentially cost himself more than it cost us.

I think the hangup there is either pride or the additional 5 mill cap hit. Maybe both.
