What he doesn't seem to feel comfortable with is putting himself in defenseless positions trying to catch the ball in traffic and I see no problem with that.

There are a ton of top 25 WR's that don't consistently come up with these types of catches. It takes a huge pair to take your eyes off the defender and stretch out or leave your feet with a safety or LB getting ready to murder you. It's up to the QB not to put certain guys in those situations and you definitely don't do it with guys who will alligator arm those passes and probably end up having it turn into a turnover.

You can't expect guys not to make business decisions on the football field, especially when this cutthroat league will get rid of you quickly if you get hurt.
again, if he's naturally SOFT, then we must NOT put him in a position where he'll close his eyes and hope that the ball sticks on his hands...

If I was a QB, I definitely wouldn't trust that Pettis would catch the ball in tight man coverage. It will probably be an interception. If he gets 4-5 yards of separation on his routes and the cornerback completely whiffs, then yeah sure. Let him YAC all day.
Doesn't look soft at all. Looks like he's going across the middle and fighting for more yards just fine.

I get it. They know deep down he's a fantastic talent, but they don't want him to have a sophomore slump. I don't know that they really expect Pettis to be like Terrell Owens, but I think maybe they don't feel his intensity on the practice field is as high as others. Wouldn't be surprised if it isn't. Pettis seems like the type of player than gets bored of practice because he knows he can beat everyone there already. On the flip side, he also seems like the type to just ball out in actual games when it's the real deal because that's where the real excitement is.

To sum up my thoughts: Pettis knows he's good. His coaches and teammates know he's good. But I completely understand their desire to keep him ahead of the curve so he gets to a level where the league can no longer do anything to "catch up" with him, but rather they just have to deal with all the ways Pettis knows how to beat them then. I think the team and coaches believe he has superstar talent and reading between the lines, it seems ever apparent to me, the team -- for good reason -- wants Pettis to try to sharpen every possible tool in the toolkit so that he gets to the point where virtually no one can stop him.

I agree with you That Pettis is a great talent. Where I think he get himself in trouble is his "get off my back man I know what I'm doing" attitude, he some times has. So what I play fortnite for 4 hr a night I work hard all day get off my back man ! I'm not sure what you meant with Terrell Owens he's not anything like Owens. Owens was bigger and Love contacted. I think Pettis Is more in the lines of Chad Johnson don't touch me type WR. Both can be great just different in the way they play. I want him to do well and this year will tell allot about him. We will not know anything till the year starts. He's going to be a starter. If he is not it's all because of attitude and work ethic. There are things he did last year that just begged me. Some of those move got him wide open but late into the route. That's why I think the QB would say stuff like he runs routes different then anyone I have seen or something like that. He was getting better at the end of last year, so I hope he can keep it up. I want him to do well. I want the team to win.

Who the f**k has 4 hours a night to play fortnight..?
Everyone is different. I just hope he doesn't lose Pettis with this type of tactic. But he would know better than I. It is funny that Pettis seems to constantly get dogged by Shanny yet a guy like Ward is penciled in as a starter, despite seemingly never playing. I get that all players are not treated the same, and hopefully this way intimately works.

Walsh rarely chewed out players in practice. He chewed out assistant coaches in front of the players. The players knew they were the real target and respected Bill even more for doing it that way.

I don't know if Kyle has spoken to Pettis about this in private, telling him this is what he was going to do and why. But I do think that though Pettis, as a player not a coach, is a minor target he's not the real target. Kyle expects a whole lot out of his very young receiver corps, all of them, this year from the git go.

Chad Johnson is a great comparison. He excelled at no one being able to touch him or read his body language. Pettis is the same. Shifty as hell at the line and great at fooling the DB on a cut.

I have no problem the way Pettis is playing in your video clip.
He's getting yards after catch's and fighting for yards.
USE him where he's comfy.. she can be a playmaker..

He is very elusive.

He's not soft when he already has the ball in his hands and is in control (dive on the ground, run out of bounds, stiff arm).

It's the contested catches, returning, and the business decisions you noted that he needs to work on for Kyle and Garoppolo to fully trust him 100%. That drive/mentality to become what we all know he's capable of becoming if he wants it.

For real. Life's biggest mystery.
