I agree but I don't know if that's something that can be learned. It's part of your personality and you're either aggressive or you aren't. It may be the thing that keeps him from becoming great but I do think you can be low key and play under control and still succeed. It's just a different style.

To be fair, Shanahan wasn't glowing in his praise of Hurd either. In fact, he was annoyed with his lack of effort/aggressiveness on the int that Beathard threw, a near identical play to the play that Pettis got crap for at the beginning of TC.

Actions speak louder than words. I saw Pettis numerous times, stiff-arm defenders (against Seattle), break tackles. He's got a "switch". It's just not manifested verbally, but rather physically. Just b/c Pettis is soft-spoken doesn't mean he doesn't have the "switch" either. Barry Sanders, Patrick Willis, Marvin Harrison -- even Nick Bosa are all soft-spoken.

I think Shanahan is just trying to create competition. I don't think it matters though. I have a feeling Samuel and Hurd will surpass Pettis on the depth chart eventually. That's not a knock to Pettis at all though. I just think Samuel and Hurd are THAT good.

You nailed my very concern from day 1.

The real reason Shanahan is being so hard on Pettis is that he knows that Pettis is the only WR that we have that is actually worth a damn. The only way this offense becomes a top 5-10 offense this year is if Pettis reaches his potential. No other WR on the team can do what he can do. The other WRs are either too raw, inept, or too limited or are only situationally useful.

They want to avoid the Witherspoon and Colbert situation where they were basically crowned them and they fell flat.

I agree.

LETS not force the issue here... Pettis is talented, if he CAN'T make the physical or tough catches, then send him deep where he can use his agility instead.

That's okay too. Can't have a whole roster of brawlers. We get too many penalties as it is.

You don't have to send a player deep if he can't make physical catches. Marvin Harrison and Torry Holt had great careers and neither of them was a physical receiver.

QBs just have to understand who they're working with. If the coverage is tight or you know the route DP is running isn't likely to get him nice and open then don't try to fit in a tight one to him because you're lowering the chance of that throw being a catch. If you're going to throw into tight coverage then go to Kittle, Deebo or Hurd.

Doesn't mean Dante isn't going to be a very good player for us. If he comes anywhere close to Harrison or Holt's career then it would be awesome.

False. Every great receiver can catch multiple balls a game with 8 people draped on them.

That being said, pettis does not become more consistent.
