Using Niner Talk as a guide you can throw a 1/3 of the team into the overrated category.

Actually that is a point. A number of posters wanted us to tank for Reggie, because he was a better than generational player. Guaranteed HoFer etc.

Yeah he had a couple of good years, he didn't live up to anywhere near the hype. Then there was his stint with the 49ers where he earned about 100k per snap.

Dude was an average QB who played on a stacked Cowboys team yet he's in the HOF.
54th in all time passer rating
Montana, Elway, Favre or Marino could have had 6 additional Super Bowl rings had they played on that team

No 49ers fans that lived through those wars is going to call him the Most overrated player ever.....

He might not have been top 5 all time QB material ...but VERY few people say he was.

Most overrated player ever?

Not only is Irving statistically relevant, Irvin changed the way WRs used their bodies to shield off shoulder throws. He fundamentally changed football with HOW he created space, and how generations of players after him learned to play the game.

I am guilty of this.... I wanted Rodgers, to me there has been no clearer sign of the College QB that was so much better then his peers.....but I expected Reggie to be a generational player.....

What is really interesting about this is, Reggie was used EXACTLY how he was expected to be used...and really only destroyed the 49ers. That is really the ONLY team he had generational results against.

Irvin may actually be underrated. He averaged 1419 yards receiving from 1991-1995 and the Cowboys were a run first team then (more rushing attempts than passing attempts from 1992-1995. Jerry Rice averaged 1451 yards receiving over that same stretch in an offense that threw for ~700-800 more yards per season. Irvin was also dominant in the playoffs during that stretch, averaging 89 yards/game and scoring 8 TDs in 11 games on a team that won 3 rings during those years. His career doesn't match up against Rice's, but Irvin was about as good in his prime and deserves to be in the Hall of Fame.
surprise- its mostly qbs

Joe Namath - cool story bro, but the impact of the 1968 Super Bowl was a team effort. for some reason people don't remember the final score of the SB being 16-7 jets with jets defense holding a Johnny Unitas ( a much much better qb) led offense to 7 mere points

John Elway - up until like 1991 he had as many TDs as picks. for a modern era qb, thats terrible. he wasn't even sniffing HoF. Shanny and TD changed that outlook. he's a good qb, but I see people put him in the top 3-5 of all time lists. that's just awfully wrong

Eli Manning- similar to Namath, the defense should be getting most of the credit here for the big wins. To be fair, the Giants D does get *some* credit simply because of the powerhouse of that offense in 2007, but still...
