The GOAT wants to get paid accordingly. Reportedly.

Ron Borges of the Boston Herald reports that Patriots quarterback Tom Brady has decided to get compensated in a way that he never really has. Citing unnamed "sources close to" Brady, he is "ready to sit out all of this year's offseason organized team activities unless he receives a contract extension that carries with it up-front money similar to what his former protege, Jimmy Garoppolo, will receive from the San Francisco 49ers."

It's unclear what "up-front money" means. Signing bonus? Full guarantees at signing? Something else?

Brady currently is due to make $14 million in 2018 and 2019, the final two years of his current deal. He consistently has gotten new contracts that trigger praise for "taking less" while always getting plenty of "up-front money." His latest contract, signed in 2016, paid him $28 million to sign. The contract before that one paid $30 million to sign.
He's never had to make a power play to get paid, and it's odd to think that Brady already has drawn a line in the sand, only five days after Super Bowl LII, about his next contract. Besides, if he's going to make a power play, wouldn't it be much better to say he'll simply retire?

Some in league circles believe that Brady made that threat in order to ensure that the Patriots keep offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels. Borges hints at dynamic, writing that McDaniels' retention "was in part orchestrated by Brady's insistence he be retained as head coach-in-waiting."

Here's the other thing that doesn't make sense here. It hasn't been all that long since Seth Wickersham of ESPN.com painted a picture of the Brady-Garoppolo relationship that had everything but a mirror, mirror on the wall. Brady would confirm the notion that he had a bizarre obsession with Garoppolo if Garoppolo's contract suddenly sparked Brady, who consistently takes less, to suddenly want more — and to use Garoppolo's deal as the comparison.

Borges may eventually be able to say "I was right" on this one because the Patriots are likely to give Brady a new deal before the starts of OTAs. And there surely will be a way to interpret the details of the two deals and argue that Brady indeed got "up-front money similar" to Garoppolo, since Brady already may have twice gotten "up-front money" as good or better than Garoppolo's new deal. Still, it seems like a bit of a stretch to think that Brady would specifically demand to be paid like any other quarterback, since he's never taken that position a single time in his 18-year career, regardless of who at any given money was getting paid more than him.

Boston Herald looking into hoax, pulls Ron Borges column

It's been a rough morning for Boston Herald columnist Ron Borges.

Borges believed he had a major scoop in today's paper: A column citing unnamed "sources" close to Tom Brady saying that Brady was ready to hold out of offseason work if the Patriots didn't give him a significant pay raise, comparable to the contract the 49ers just gave Brady's former backup Jimmy Garoppolo. But then WEEI revealed that one of its listeners had hoaxed Borges with a text purporting to be from Brady's agent, and that the whole premise of Borges' column was bogus.
PFT checked with the Boston Herald's sports editor, Sean Leahy, who told us, "We're looking into it."

Meanwhile, the Boston Herald has pulled Borges' column off its website, which strongly suggests that they've already concluded that "looking into it" is something that Borges failed to do when he got the text.

Borges cited "sources," plural, in his column saying that Brady would hold out, but it appears that Borges was relying on only one source, and that one source was a prankster who fooled him. Borges has a history of poor journalistic practices, including an instance of plagiarism that precipitated his departure from the Boston Globe. We've caught Borges copying and pasting from PFT without credit in the past. Now he has egg on his face again.

I get the feeling Brady has played in his last SB. If Krafty or Belichick had a sharp knife (as Coach Walsh did) Brady would be gone this off season and the dynasty would have continued with Jimmy G.

I tend to agree. I was stunned at the news that they had let us have Garoppolo for a 2nd. I thought they would find a way of keeping them both for one more season then easing Brady out. I think the franchise has peaked and is now on the decline. I think Kraft's intervention regarding Brady is likely to lead to Belichick's retirement. His ego is not going to like being overruled and, to be honest, it was a stupid thing to do leaving only Hoyer in reserve. One more year for Brady?

Tom Brady put together the best performance ever in a Superbowl and he does incredibly well taking care of his body while he ages. I believe this guy when he says he can go until 45. What has he shown to doubt him?

He threw for the most yards but that wasn't the best performance ever in a sb. He actually missed quite a few throws. Wasn't even the best qb performance in the game.

Good point. When you get strip sacked on just the second play of the would be game winning drive of a SB I don't think you can call that the best unless you were talking about last year's performance which wasn't great until the 2nd half.
