There is a fine line between being concerned about something and simply wondering if there is more to the story. When it comes to Nick Bosa, San Francisco 49ers fans have every right to be wondering right now. The 49ers have listed Bosa as dealing with soreness, and Kyle Shanahan has indicated that there is no major setback with the star defensive end. On Saturday, the head coach was asked if there's reason for concern.
"No," Shanahan answered. "He was doing great, and then he got sore just going through some of the individual. You wish that didn't happen, but no, there's no concern to where something's happened that is a big setback or anything. We'll wait until the soreness goes away and evaluate why the soreness has happened, but I still feel pretty good about that."
That's encouraging news, but Bosa has now missed multiple practices because of this "soreness." And unlike some of the other players who have been dealing with minor injuries during training camp, Bosa hasn't been seen doing much on the side while sitting out. That has caught the attention of several observers. Shanahan said there hasn't been any big setback, but he didn't say there had been no setback.
Bosa's return from last year's torn ACL was always going to be one of the biggest storylines surrounding the 49ers this season. He suffered the injury in Week 3 last season, ending what had been an impressive start to the year. It was also the third ACL injury of his football career and his second since entering the NFL.
When the 49ers opened training camp, there were reasons to be encouraged. Bosa was not placed on the Active/PUP list, and John Lynch said he had been cleared to begin camp. The plan was to gradually work him back into things, beginning with individual work. Lynch also said Bosa has a great feel for his own body.
And early in camp, Bosa looked good enough that some said they couldn't even tell Bosa had been injured. So what, if anything, has changed?
The answer may be...absolutely nothing. Bosa may simply be experiencing some soreness after increasing his workload following an ACL reconstruction. And if that's all this is, the 49ers are doing exactly what they should. There is no reason to push Bosa through training camp to prove that he's healthy.
But this is also where the questions begin. Is the knee recovering exactly the way everyone hoped it would? Could there be some lingering issue that the 49ers don't want to make public yet? Or is this simply a matter of Bosa and the training staff being extremely cautious because they know how important it is to have him healthy when the games actually count?
Then there's another possibility that shouldn't be ignored—the contract. Bosa signed a massive five-year extension with San Francisco back in 2023, and the 49ers have dealt with contract storylines involving him before, most notably when he held out of training camp during those previous negotiations. Could there be some business element to his current absence?
Perhaps. His cap hit is scheduled to jump next year. And some people believe the 49ers may not want to pay what Bosa is scheduled to make after this season. But I'm not sure I'd put much stock in that theory at this point. Because Bosa is locked up for the long term, there shouldn't be any reason for a contract dispute.
The more interesting question to me is why we aren't seeing Bosa doing the kind of side work we've seen from other players dealing with minor issues. That doesn't necessarily mean anything. But it is something worth watching.
The 49ers have already dealt with an enormous number of players missing practice during this training camp. At one point, 20 of the 90 players on the roster were sitting out, and Bosa was among those listed with soreness. And with him, the stakes are different.
The 49ers' pass rush desperately needs Bosa. San Francisco finished last season with only 20 sacks, the fewest in the NFL, and Bosa's return is one of the biggest factors in determining whether this defense can become what the 49ers need it to be.
So, should fans be worried? Not yet. But should we be watching closely? Absolutely.
If Bosa returns to practice in the next few days and looks like the player we saw early in camp, this will probably turn out to be nothing more than a veteran player and a training staff being smart with a very important knee. If the soreness continues, if he misses more and more practices, or if we start hearing different language from the 49ers about what's actually bothering him, then the questions become much more serious.
For now, I'm not ready to sound the alarm. But I'm also not going to pretend I haven't started wondering if there could be more to this than simple soreness. After everything Bosa has been through with that knee, I think it's a perfectly reasonable question to ask.
