I want you to know that we feel that way,"

The door was always open... People just didn't want to listen.
I can't speak for everyone, but for me, my reasoning is, why in the HELL would Jimmy EVER want to take a pay cut and play for the 49ers as the backup fter the way they insulted him (or so I imagined he would feel).
It wasn't, as you guys are implying, that we thought Jimmy sucked and the 49ers wanted to get rid of him ASAP. Just like it wasn't that the reason teams didn't trade for him was because he "sucked." In both cases, the salary had something to do with it.
And we WERE right on the 49ers end. They did NOT pay Jimmy 27 million dollars, did they? Nope. They made him reduce his salary to a number that is 400% smaller (400%*6.5 ~= 27.5).
Where we were clearly 100% wrong is with Jimmy's attitude. I would not have fault him if he told the 49ers to go to Hell, and I was certain he'd have felt that way. It turns out Jimmy is an even more stand up guy that we thought. Because he certainly doesn't need money.
