Truth!

Good call - "The value of backups are going up."

You're right. Though I think we could get a 3rd for him this offseason. But that shouldn't be enough to part from a QB who has proven capable to win games. That's especially true since Garoppolo still needs to prove he can do it for 16 games AND he's in the team's walk year on his contract.

Just doesn't make sense to trade him for a mid-rounder. The likelihood that he will start games in 2019 is very high.

Agree

IMO, we could easily get a 2nd. The QB draft market took a hit and one quality prospect off the board.

It added considerable value to Nick.

The only way I could be worth it would be a top 10 first round pick.

Which I really don't think will happen.

The Jags are the tam I see most likely to offer the most but not their first round , #9, pick.

I think for a second or even a high third you have to atleast consider it. That's incredible value for an UDFA.

There is a lot of value in a qb who can win as a starter, especially on a team with a FQB who has missed more starts due to injury than he has made.
The fact that he was an UDFA has no impact on his value.
Beathard is not good enough to be the 49ers backup QB, Mullens would have to be replaced by vet and possibly a draft pick.

amazing so many want to get rid of nick. if jimmy gets hurt and yes. you have to say that with his history.. not to mention do we even know he will be 100 per cent or ready to come to training camp? do you people really want to give the keys to cj? again. keep cj around in pre season, let him take the hits. and then when teams are looking for a qb trade cj for a 6th. in the meantime. if lynch gets a few extra picks find a qb late on day three or sign some undrafted guy.

Realistically, he probably could fetch a late 2nd-3rd round pick this offseason. People forget how crazy this league is for QBs.

QBs have been signed and/or traded for significant value with less of a track record than Mullens.

But I highly doubt we would be sitting here in 2019 -- needing our backup QB to start a few games in the middle of a playoff hunt -- thinking, "well at least we got that backup RG..."

I think if he continued to improve, at the end of 2019, he will get a more deserving backup QB contract from Lynch. He shouldn't be on a UDFA contract as a 2nd back up QB.

Is there a way to keep the contract structure but give him a pay raise
If I were the Giants or the Broncos i wouldn't invest much in any of the QB's coming out this year. The Giants could go one more year with Manning and the Broncos with Keenan. If they have another bad year then next years class of QB's is looking better than this years. Why waste a high pick this year on a mediocre QB when you could use your pick to bolster the O line or the defense.

i hate that fact that we may have to cut ties with ward in order to afford to keep the kid ward seems to be more versatile than nick

Ward's versatility is finding different ways to get injured

What if New England comes a calling for their late first round pick? Kid is better than their backup QB now.
