I don't know if teams can take out insurance policies or not. I would think they would if they could. When you see this kind of thing happen with Smith or any of these guys who always seem to be injured it makes a great argument against guaranteed contracts. The only thing guaranteed in the NFL is that you will get injured.

Is there a timetable for his return?

This implies he won't get injured in practice the day after returning. Best to just not count on him at all. It's not like he's a special talent anyways. People forget how s**tty he was on the Raiders and only remember his Seattle years where he was surrounded by pro bowl talent.

It's frustrating, that the 49ers don't want to open their pocket book for some FAs that could have helped us this offseason, yet they are playing Ward 8 million, Smith, and have so much cap space.

Yup. Makes no sense.
times ten.
And what makes it so painful is that the guy was a terrible player and still got paid. It's not like we rolled the dice on a good player who is just injured.

He's listed as a starter this week. Has that been the case for the past 2 weeks as well?

Well he's finally practicing this week on schedule to play. The problem is starting Smith will place Warner on the bench and I just don't see how you bench Warner.
No way I'm starting this dude over Warner. Warner and Foster are the future. Smith hasn't even really played for a year.

Just force him in as Sam on Run downs but I'd rather continue to develop Lee out there as he's more than likely on this team next year than Smith is.

I agree but Saleh might. Smith is making too much money at the same time.

I never understood this argument, unless they are just trying to save face. What's done is what's done. Move on and keep him in reserve.
This fool make it through practice without further injury for once?
