If Smith ends up contributing at all, that'll be pleasantly surprising. I'm not expecting anything from him.

Bowman and Smith play different positions.
They want Foster at MIKE for some reason. I'd prefer him at WILL with Bowman at MIKE but that isn't what's happening.
Smith played his best ball in SEA as a 4-3 WILL. He played out-of-position for the raiders. I think he'll be solid at WILL again next season.
Smith actually played a lot of SAM for the Seahawks. Reason being is because they frequently ran "over" fronts instead of under which made the SAM often times interchangeable with the WILL. So I could see Smith doing the same for instances where we do that over front at times.
We might just have the beefy base DL to allow that.

I agree. I love Bowman but injuries made him become a liability

We opened the season with some strong defensive efforts that carried the team with him in the middle and then we gave up our worst rushing game the moment we cut him...in fact this defense went down hill after he left up until Jimmy G started playing and covering for their deficiencies with time of possession and his ability to score.

We over payed for mid tier talent. i understand we had to since no one wanted to come here, maybe it will be better this off season now that jimmy is here
Lol every team over pays in free agency. Imo free agency is like the draft, it's a crap shoot.

The deal isn't awful, but we overpaid. We were desperate to find some players that had familiarity with KS's and Salah's systems. He has two years left on his deal, averaging $5M/season. The final 2 years are options.
Smith played less than a third of Seattle's snaps in 2015. He won the SB MVP, but he was a reserve/ST player.
He's an upgrade over Ray Ray and most likely Coyle (should be resigned for depth at WILL and MIKE). He'll add more speed to the defense, which is a great thing. He'll be able provide more in coverage, which is also something we could use.

The good news is it was an upper body injury so he probably hasn't lost any speed.

Torn pectoral. Hell be good to go. Re-sign Coyle, and take a WILL/MLB in draft.

Is this dude even going to be able to contribute coming off his injury? I mean is he going to be better than Bowman was?
I'm not sure I'd stick a bunch of stock in Malcom Smith.
We should definitely try to bring in another starter.

Can't really compare the 2. Smith is coming off a pretty standard upper body injury with a full year to recover since it happened in TC. Bowman suffered one of the worst knee injuries ever and followed that up with a ruptured achellis. I expect Smith will be a full recovery.
