Plus we didn't know about Bowman either. The FO had to be thinking, Brooks is 33, Ray-Ray is coming off a torn pec, Bo off an achilles, Wilhoite sucks, Harold has done nothing, Lynch was fat and lazy, etc.

I'd say "gaping hole" would be an understatement. LOL.

If they have a DC who loves a scheme-fit guy at that position, the FO did what they were supposed to do. Secure that player.

He'll obviously help Bo and Ray-Ray get up to speed but the overall point is, we might finally have a legit LB crew again with Brooks, Bo, Foster with depth in Ray-Ray, Harold, Watson, etc...plus an in-shape Lynch and Elvis and now, AA playing well.

That's one hell of a turn-around if you ask me.

But yeah, JL sucks and did nothing.

Loved your optimism here!!
I am curious.. how many names did you list above? 8? of the names listed above how many you think will be back? Obviously a few were discarded already.

Haha, yeah I wrote that back on August 8th in illustrating why they signed Smith in the first place.

Turned out correct mostly...Bo never recaptured his explosion and was cut, Ray-Ray sucked, Wilhoite cut, Brooks shipped off, etc.

We're now down to Harold, Coyle and Foster. That might have been a nice unit with Harold, Smith and Foster if not for the injury.

Harold has a shot to be back unless we can find an equal SAM who can pass rush and obviously, Smith and Foster will be back and Coyle will be resigned for depth and ST.

So we have foster... a backup playing as a starter in coyle and then smith who is coming off an injury and Harold who would get released but we really have now one..
Hmmm yea sucks but we need bodies here bad

Yes sir. The team was high on Elijah Lee so keep your eye on him. But this is why many are projecting Roquan Smith to us. That would go a long way to solidifying the LB unit.

Smith is real good around the line of scrimmage and is a good tackler. You don't want Smith in coverage. He will get exposed big time if he has to play in coverage.

So would you say he best fits in Eli spot

I'm all for drafting another lb preferable mid round with one of our multi picks.

So Malcom. Ruben. At will or mike?

The mike makes a lot of calls not sure want Ruben slowed down with that?

Who takes that 3rd spot

highest graded bench warmer by PFF. lock him up.
I can't see the niners signing a LB to challenge him for his starting spot, definitely draft someone, we are all hoping for Roquan I think..

Roquan doesn't fix our pass rush issue...if it doesn't get addressed in F/A then it needs to get addressed early in the draft.

THIS. I'm tired of hearing about fans about yelling for Roquan when our real issue is the pass rush and secondary. If he's there in the 3rd Round, I can probably see us picking him up.

I think so, I think Malcolm Smith is a SOLID football player and he obviously knows this system inside-out but he is a band-aid, stop gap player IMO. He's keeping the seat warm for someone else. If Roquan Smith is available at 9 or 10 and I think he likely will be, it will be very hard to pass on him with the potential of having another Willis-Bowman type duo with Smith & Foster...

Yeah, no doubt, M.Smith would be a huge upgrade over Brock Coyle but Roquan Smith has "special" Foster-like abilities.

the team is not going to put its eggs into the basket of a guy coming back from a injury. they will draft a good rookie or sign a vet or both., and if they have a late round pick take lanning of isu as an extra pick. aside from foster who has a injury history, our linebackers were not good at all

Where does the Niners linebackers rank?

This. I really hope they go into every offseason with the mentality as if they are a crap team and need to upgrade talent and never overhype themselves while always looking for better talent.
