From Saleh's Presser.
You stunt a players growth playing them out of position then make a comment they have a long way to go to be NFL ready...
Wow

How's DB Tarvarius Moore playing at free safety? Do you plan to keep him there when DB Jimmie Ward comes back or is the plan to move him back to corner?

"Yeah, he's staying at free. He's been progressively getting better. He's by no means even close to being an NFL-ready safety by Week 1, but he is getting progressively better. He's got a lot of things to clean up with regards to, he's hesitating, which is expected. He's still new at the position, but he's got to get to the point where he's not really thinking about his job anymore where he can react and trigger, which is so important for our safety to be able to do."

Sooo, according to some at camp, the defense has used the wide 9 almost exclusively in both base and nickel except for when there are 2 players in the backfield(RB and FB). They move back into their under front in that situation. This is going to be exciting to watch!!

Can't wait to see us match up with the Rams. Outside zone from 11 personnel is a Ram staple. Our wide 9 should help with that. Take away the run and pressure Goff. We can beat the Rams.

Dude, how cool is that!? We get insight from a former NFL player who played in Kocurek's front.

So, that answers that question: this is a good ol' shoot'em up, bang bang, one-gapper.

Day should be perfect next to Buckner. From inactive to a key cog in this defense. That might be good news for Solomon Thomas at 2i???

NC...that is the most edifying set of posts seen here in a long time...from the horses mouth. Well done.

It definitely illuminates how the wide 9 can work with all the new rush personnel we have.
So Papa said our D will have 3 LBs stacked. Wonder if it will look like this:

With the speed at our LB spots, I'm liking it.

Yes, I believe it will look like that.

I wish we could pin posts so this one doesn't get lost in the shuffle. I know jd/thl would love to see this since there was a discussion about the gapping in the wide 9

We can just bump it daily. LOL

Nice illustration. With every scheme and alignment, there are weaknesses. You can damn near SEE them here. You can see how critically important Buck and that 2i will be.

Someone educate me here. Per image above, because our Tan, Zero, and Tan LBs are undersized but super fast, the 3T and/or 2i must demand a double team. That's the only way our LBs will be free to shoot to fill holes. The 9Ts must also be able to disrupt the Tackles because ain't no way they are getting double-teamed unless its a TE or RB helping.

Nope. Go back a page to post #10993. The 2i and 3T are all about one-gapping and exploding into the backfield and forcing the OL to try and react while the W9 edge rushers force everything inside to the cluster f**k caused by players such as Day + Buckner. Naturally that stresses the LB's to fill the proper gaps, use their instincts and make plays. Team defense but it starts with forcing the action. All gas, no brakes, for real.

A simple draw play would kill this formation.

It could if your 3T and 2i aren't disciplined en route to the QB and your 2 LB's don't fill properly.
Here's how the W9 helps the smaller ER's...give them more space to convert speed to power when needed and better sightline.

That's a Cards T, who run power, so you know he's close to 100 pounds heavier than Dee Ford.

Meh. A stunt with either Solomon or Buckner, and normal DLine splits, Ford could get to the QB much faster and that would have been a sack or tipped pass and not a pass thrown. No need to have the disadvantage of having the wide splits to weaken your defense against the run in those kinds run/pass kind of situations. Now, if it was 3rd and long (say 15+ yards) I'd go wide 9 100% of the time. Even better if they perfect those holding techniques by Buckner or Solomon on the Guard & Tackle -- that will free up Ford even faster. But I get where Kocureck/Saleh is coming from - with everybody playing 11 personnel the wide 9 alignment isn't a detriment as it was in the past.
