Who should be Baalke's replacement, if he finally gets fired?

hes been working in the league since i think the early 90s. several jobs in scouting and personel depts around the league since then an i think even a coaching job for a couple years somewhere. all that kind of experiecne is what you need and he has a lot of love here because he was high up in our FO during the recent glory years while we were acquiring and keeping vets for our SB run. was a big exec on playoff teams in the colts, eagles and us. does this all translate to being a great GM, youl never know until he gets a chance. but what we do know is hes played a big part on several playoff teams. something we need right now.

I don't see Gamble getting a whole lot of love, he's just the obvious choice for GM should Baalke get fired. It starts with his relationship with Chip Kelly which goes back a long time, back when Kelly was at New Hampshire so you'd have the coach and the GM both on the same page together. Gamble isn't the greatest or worst GM candidate out there but he's likely the best that the 49ers could hope to get.

Unlike with a lot of assistant coaches who tend to jump on jobs when they are offered them, the very top GM candidates tend to be extremely picky and its not uncommon for guys to turn down interviews for years. Considering how the ownership is viewed around the league, I can't see anyone with real options that isn't already working for the team taking the leap of faith to come work under Jed and Al Guido.



Sometimes you hire a guy that has been around for awhile and it works out for you. The Cards are a perfect example, they went from a horrible GM in Rod Graves, hired the guy that had been right under him in Steve Keim who had been with the organization for 14 years and it worked out pretty well for them for the most part. All you can do is hope that Gamble also ends up being successful.

A guy like Chris Ballard, is the type of executive the Yorks would avoid.

It should be DeCosta but he won't accept it so we will probably go with Gamble.

Gamble has been a part of the 49ers front office since 1995 safe the to years he was with the Eagles before they fired him and the 49ers hired him back.
He is part of the York and Marathe circle of trust, like Tomsula, and therefore is a logical choice for them, like Tomsula.
The guy has the stink of the 49ers FO all over him.

Prior to being named director of player personnel, Gamble served as the director of pro personnel for the previous seven seasons in San Francisco. In that role, Gamble monitored every NFL roster with an emphasis on scouting talent of upcoming free agents, while also maintaining continuous depth of personnel of the 49ers roster. In 2010, he was assigned additional responsibilities in collegiate scouting in order to maximize the use of his talent evaluation expertise.

Before arriving in San Francisco, Gamble served as a college scout for the Colts from 1998-04 under veteran NFL executive Bill Polian.

From 1995-96, Gamble held a stint in the coaching ranks as a defensive assistant/quality control coach with the New York Jets. He then returned to player evaluation as a part-time college scout for the Carolina Panthers before serving as a pro scout for the Baltimore Ravens during the 1997 season.

DeCosta had declined all GM interview requests over the past few years. The Ravens are the only NFL team he had ever been with. He isnt going anywhere. Not sure why anyone thinks he is an option.
