I also think longevity is over rated. I'd consider a player that is unstoppable for say 5 years to be better than a player that was good for 10 years.

I also don't think Emmit Smith is better than Barry Sanders just because Emmitt played longer.

Completely agree

AND neither on was better than Walter Payton.

He did it for many years w/out a really good Oline.

Only WR I would take over CJ would be Rice.

When did Barry Sanders have a good Oline?
What's his contract status? If he's not retiring I'd like to see him in Red&Gold.
Megatron, Boldin, Torrey Smith. in Kelly's system scaaary.

Agree

BUT Walter did it for A LOT longer w/crap Oline.
Ranking WRs I've seen I'd go:
1. Jerry Rice
2. Randy Moss
3. Calvin Johnson
4. Larry Fitzgerald
5. Terrell Owens
6. Chris Carter
7. Odell Beckham Jr.
8. Antonio Brown
9. Michael Irvin
10. Tim Brown

I know Odell and Antonio its way too early to really rank them, but the plays each of them made int he span of 2-3 years has been unbelievable.

Otherwise my 2 other veterans would be: Marvin Harrison and Andre Johnson
Calvin is a good player. But top 5 all time? That's gotta be a joke. Herman Moore had a few great years in the mid 90s too. Fitzgerald is way better

I'm with ya.

Art Monk, Anthony Carter, Cris Carter, Rice, Moore....

CJ was really good but my top five is a bit too crowded for him. I'd put Brown above him and He's not in my to five.

Joking? I bet a lot of NFL "Experts" will put CJ as a top WR of all time.

Players voted him as the 6th best player in the NFL before this season.

I can't really think of someone who has his 4.3 speed, and is 6'5 230lbs, with some of the best hands.

What part of CJ's game doesn't he have? Whats your negative part of his game that he doesn't have that other players you list above do have?

edit:
Hypothetically Crab, if Calvin Johnson finishes his career as the #2 all time WR in yards, is he then a top 5 WR all time and first-ballot? That was your reasoning for TO.

I give more credit to the wrs of previous eras who may have little less stats. Ball wasn't thrown around 50 times per game like it is now. You can't touch the wr these days or even hit them. There's zero fear of going over the middle. Calvin put up some good stats in an inflated Era. I for one value seasons like Isaac Bruce in 1995 over anything Calvin Johnson did.
Calvin Johnson is a great WR but people tend to get to over hyped with the present and are easy to declare them the greatest of all time. There were other great wrs before now.

I think certain eras, due to rules and design, do inflate some stats. But also some eras just produce better players due to better training and more competitive field.

The NFL in the 70s was played by guys happy to make $100k or less and they didn't have half the training science that goes into athletes these days. They grew up playing football that was pre-dominantly rushing attacks, wishbone offenses etc. So I think it compeltely logical WRs weren't as exceptional in say the 70's as they are now.

You also have to account for the fact of the quality of QB throwing to them and the design of the offense.

Jerry Rice's numbers are inflated because he played for a brilliant offensive mind and had 2 HOF QBs throwing to him. If Jerry Rice spent his career playing for the Atlanta Falcons, the fact is Jerry Rice wouldn't have his numbers.

Marvin Harrison IMO probably isn't a top 10 WR in our minds if he doesn't spend his career with Peyton.

TO may not have had a HOF qb throwing to him, but Jeff Garcia IMO played pretty well during those peak years. And I think its odd the pro-TO bandwagon doesn't remember all of his dropped passes suddenly....

You could go on forever about saying this guys stats were lower/high because of X,Y, Z.

Yet I'm still waiting for what attribute Megatron doesn't have. He is one of the fastest players at WR, one of the biggest, some of the best hands etc. If you were to rate players on a 1-10 scale for each skill, Megatron scores extremely high in all of them. He is a completely unique and rare athletic talent.

I have nothing but respect for the man in an age where so many players are me me me, look at me. More than anything though, this is a growing trend - retirement of players with less than 10 years. Which shows how remarkable Rice's run was or Brady or Manning.

Many are more self aware prioritizing their health and life over the glamor and money of football.

I don't know if I would have the will power to walk away, but ideally if I was a football player I would retire at like 30, save my brain and body.
