I said at the beginning I would rather have Watt. Look how it turned out. Watt = best defensive player in the league and a 1st ballot hall of famer. Aldon Smith = missed all or some of 3 seasons with rehab, shooting guns in air, smashing into trees, smashing into parked cars.

People were arguing up and down on here for years that he was better than JJ Watt..... I said at the beginning I would rather have Watt. Look how it turned out. Baalkes master plan. Aldon signs a one year deal with the raiders. Plays a couple games before the NFL suspends him for the rest of the year, we then sign Aldon in the off-season and not have to worry about him missing any games due to suspension

Yes, it was stupid that they released him rather than just letting the NFL determine whether to suspend him WITHOUT pay of whether he would be OK'ed to play.

Maddogg was right. Draft Watt, let Ray Mac walk, have brooks and harylson play OLB with Watt and Justin Smith at bookends.

Really don't get why people bring up the Aldon vs Watt comparison. Yes in hindsight Watt should of been the pick but people seem to forget where we were that year. At the time we were dying for pass rush because Harylson leveled out, Brooks couldn't be counted on to stay in shape and we already had two good starting DEs. Cant blame Aldons drinking problem on the GM, he was a great pick when he was dump trucking tackles into the QB but he let the fame and money get to him and developed an addiction, it happens. For as many "we should of drafted this guy" comments those posters have an equal amount of misses, even MD. I remember him blowing up about our center situations a couple years in a row only to get served when Baas and Goodwin all turned out to be more than adequate.

Good luck to Aldon Smith. Hope he does well & would love to see him back in a 49ers uniform, but will just have to see how it plays out.

All of this is correct.
Also in the 2013 nfl.com draft do over for 2011, they still had the 49ers picking Aldon Smith instead of JJ Watt, whom at the time had a breakout 2012 season himself.
