Fair enough. I'm all for a 4-week tryout. I'm just not expecting much.

I'll take a Dan Skuta type player but we will see

Skuta was solid here in 2014. I get the feeling the scheme and the players around him made him look a lot better than he actually was. He was pretty much useless in Jacksonville last year.

He's probably a pretty good analog for Rush. Not sure about Rush's ST ability, though. He better have some if he has any hope of ever dressing on Sunday.

I don't even think he'll be in the rotation if he makes the 53. I'm looking back at inactives last year and we rarely, if ever, dressed 4 OLBs.

Different coaching staff last yr

Looks like the Browns and Eagles had at least one inactive OLB most weeks too.

Probably a pretty safe bet he doesn't dress unless someone gets hurt in front of him.

I'm not arguing to keep Lemon. I'm arguing to keep Cromartie or Reaser.

So we should only go into the season with 3 OLBs?

The 4th OLB was inactive most weeks last year from what I remember.

I hate the inactive rule. Why can't all 53 just dress and play.

I get it that he hasn't done it against the starters. But it's not like we're overflowing with high quality OLB pass rushers. And with Lynch's suspension, I think it would be a real shame if he's not on the 53 for the first quarter of the season.

He probably will be on the 53, just not the 46 on game days.

IMO he'll make the 53 for the first 4 weeks but then shaky when Lynch comes back. I wonder how he does in practice VS Staley/Brown/AD, even Theus/Cooper. Don't forget about Blair who they've had lineup at OLB as well who has the strength and burst to set the edge and rush standing up.

Yep, that's the real question. What is he showing in practice? And good point on Blair.

Agree, he's earned a spot on the 53 to open the season at least. He's been the top graded pass rusher of the pre-season per PFF. His production is against backups, but he's done exactly what you'd want him to do against that type of competition...dominate.

Blair will definitely make the game day roster..very versatile. Don't be surprised if by week 5 he starts at OLB and plays DT/DE on passing downs. He has the size and strength and burst to play 4 positions, it's crazy.

People keep citing his PFF grade but I can't find it. I subscribe, but it's honestly mostly for kicks. The grades are pretty crappy since it's not like they have any knowledge of assignments. I did find this from the Packers game, though:

Top defensive grades:

LB Shayne Skov, 84.5

ED Aaron Lynch, 81.7

ED Corey Lemonier, 79.9

LB Gerald Hodges, 79.5

LB Michael Wilhoite, 78.0

Linebackers, edge rushers perform well on defense

Although the defensive line got pushed around a bit in run defense, the 49ers' inside linebackers graded well in run defense. Shayne Skov had four run stops and Gerald Hodges added two. Edge rushers Aaron Lynch and Corey Lemonier finished with the top two pass-rush grades in this game, with Lemonier generating three hurries on only seven rushes. That's a positive sign at a position of need for the Niners.
