Like who? Orlando Brown who is the exact same size? Connor Williams who might lack the length to play tackle in the NFL?

If you have a good tackle, seeing the dearth in quality tackles and OL period I'm not sure why you would roll the dice on what may turn out to be a significant downgrade.

Superior wisdom just needs to be reposted. (PHX's, not XF's)

As long as he stays healthy and produces I'm fine with him for another year. However if there is any question about his desire let him walk after that. More money will not increase his desire to be a better player. I just know as a man on a TEAM even if it really hurt and I couldn't play it would be tough to look Joe or Marquise in the eye coming to work everyday. To many whispers about his lack of toughness concerns me. A lot of the beat writers said the coaching staff was very annoyed with him last year and I didn't hear any of them come out and say those reports were wrong. It's to bad because the man is ultra talented and a superior pass protector. The draft and FA will give us some clues about his future with this team. I really hope he's a part of 2019 and beyond because he could be a huge piece.

I think he needs to stay healthy, stay at weight and play 16 this year before we sign him LT. His stamina lasted 16 games under Chip Kelly and he was on the field just as much under Kyle.

The only real question was whether he could tough it out the final couple games with an injury and that was only in question because Jimmy G was about to go up against the best defense in the NFL and his backup, Gilliam, was already on I.R. after like 5 snaps and we were stuck with Beadles. A one-armed Brown is better than Beadles!

But then we found out he actually played through an injury that required immediate surgery and as a result, he is ahead of schedule now. It was the right thing to do.

If you follow him, his surgery went great, his weight looks good and he's very focused on his career and I got hints that he's in contract talks (we might be trying to low ball him now while he's injured and he's not thrilled about it).

But I still would like to see him play one more full season, year 2 of this scheme, but wouldn't be surprised if we locked him up before the season ended also.

When your RT neutralizes or dominates a teams best edge rusher (Miller, Bennett, Avril, etc.) to the point they try wide 9 or give up and move him to the other side of the LOS, you've already won. I don't know if there is another T in football that is capable of that.

As to the run, as you can see, he's downright dominant 1on1, and can wipe out an entire side of the line especially in short yardage and goal line situations. On stretch runs, as long as he can get out wide, little running backs like Breida can hide behind him and explode through the hole. He can get to the second level typically on inside zone but obviously, is going to struggle stretching out consistently and then get to the second level.

But even his PP, when he's forcing a wide 9, that alone gives a huge alley inside to cut up into. His PP is elite when healthy and average in run blocking making him, overall, one of the best RT in the game st 24 years old.

And we need to remember, this was year 1 in a brand new offense...new running and passing scheme and assignments. Tomlinson, Kilgore and Fusco, who aren't 6'8" 345, also struggled learning the new running schemes.

Agreed, you don't let that s**t walk out the door especially when you don't have anything behind that and a 34 yr old LT.

If he comes back healthy in training camp I'd look to resign him...if a deal can't be reach you bet your ass I'm tagging him and working on a deal in 2019...jimmy G's contract makes it possible to pay him much easier in 2019.

That's an awesome point. With Jimmy G Spot signed LT now, we have that Franchise Tag free to use on anyone next year and a T would be a great one to use that on. In fact, next year, because we're so young and because we'll add more free agents this year, there really isn't anyone else we'd need to entertain FTing is there? Tartt maybe.

Excellent point NC, who else WOULD we use it on? Dang, having JG locked up just opened so many doors for us, this being one, OT, but also as a huge azz billboard for recruiting top flite guys to come to a team with one of best NFL QBs, LOTS of $$ and willing to spend them, plus a Schid hot HC/OC and a GM that everyone likes and admires. Plus they would have to move from say, Chicago, Boston, Houston , Kansas or some other place to SF. Man, even before season starts, this is shaping up to be one helluva yr.

As you well know, we went into the 2017 season needing 18 starters, including FR QB and backup. Now we are short ER, CB, 2 LBs, for "must have " guys. The #1 WR (Jimmy graham type ) would be nice, but cripes, how many more and better targtets does JG need? Like somebody said awhile back, "Does he really need a #1WR when he currently is throwing for over 300 yds /game?" Yeah, nice for goal line but not a "must have" need. The ER, 3 OLs, CB, S...those are must haves. And then we need a lot of qualified backups. But man are we ever close right now. We probably won't land the ER we need so badly, but i bet we get a pair of LBs, CB, and of course 3 starting OLs. #1 WR is nice on goal line but not an essential. The ER may be a guy we draft and grow on our own.

Yea agree with all you. If there's any doubt on Brown then tag him. Works for everyone. He finally gets paid, gets to prove himself . And we get to see if he comes in better shape, fits the offense, plays better with jimmy there.
He is going to be a Niner for a very long time!

Bet on it!!!
I have not heard anything negative from the coaching staff directly on Trent Brown. I believe this is all media conjecture.

San Francisco would be foolish to let Brown walk given they have an aging LT and a lack of interior talent and depth on the roster. If anything I'd be asking big things of Brown with the understanding he may be able to shift across to LT when Staley retires. Brown is young and already a plug him and and forget about it type of player. Coaches don't have to worry about Brown in games. That's the kind of player every coach needs.

I'll speculate here but maybe Trent is just an awkward type of guy that the media doesn't relate to. There are introverts, etc, who keep to themselves and are perhaps misunderstood.
nice post bzborow...I haven't bought into any of this "oh he's a slackard" or "he might not come to camp in shape" crap. That is just idle rumor , no facts. FRankly he worked his azz off last PS and camp, and really developed a helluva set of hands. He grabs the vest up close and then gives 3 quick body blows is what it looks like and knocks his pass rusher on his can. Making top grade passrushers split to wide 9 or going to other side of DL, tells you how good he is. This b.s. about trent might not do this or "Can't Do" that, is just that...b.s. But most knowledgeable fans know his value. Guys that have no understanding how an OL works and its function...yeah, they don't know. But they will get it one day. And no, kyle nor john is thinking of trading him.

I've heard lynch mention his weight a couple times, but also give him really high praise.

"He struggles to keep his weight down a little bit; he came back a little heavy, but he's worked incredibly hard to bring that weight down," Lynch said

I think Trent is the opposite of introvert . He dresses flashy, like expensive clothing, stands out, and he's pretty funny on Twitter. Checkout his IG and Twitter. And he LOVES money. That should be enough of a motivator to keep that weight down for him.

Thats part of the problem from what I understand. Will he stay committed once he gets that big payday? The money may be the only thing keeping him motivated.
I doubt it.

It wouldn't be the first time its happened.
His weight will always be an issue. He had documented weight issues coming out of college. A tiger never changes his stripes.

NFL.com
WEAKNESSES Has stiff knees and butt rides high pre-snap in stance. Will take poor angles when teams try him in the gaps. If beaten, doesn't have the athleticism to recover. Power-only player and limits what an offense can do. Scouts call him an "inconsistent worker." Needs players to be squared up and will struggle when they get to his edge. Played just 43 percent of the snaps during 2014 season due to injury and conditioning issues.

Brown measured in at 376 pounds at the Senior Bowl before dropping weight to 355 pounds at the combine. His weight is a major issue, even with the focus in the predraft process on controlling his size. He's stiff with limited movement due to heavy feet. Brown is far too inconsistent on film. His 2014 season was cut short due to injury but also because of bad conditioning and inconsistent play. If he can't get his weight under control, he will eat his way out of the NFL.
