When you have two pro bowls safeties in front of you like @E_Reid35 and @ABethea41 you shouldn't expect to start you should expect to learn

Love that mentality

Love it too...you have a chance to learn from one of the best in the games in Bethea and another in Reid and be worked into dime packages. Your time will come, no doubt. But you've got to learn the ropes first!

The way he plays indicates that being humble will not deter him from being very physical and agressive when his chance comes!

Um. Yeah. He's going to force Goodell to make up new rules...again.

From what I've seen he's not a head hunter nor does he hit after the whistle...very different than Goldson. He is just a load when he runs into people.

Hitner wasn't a head hunter, refs were just out to screw us during the Harbaugh era IMO.

Whitner suffered by being Goldson's teammate. Goldson did some really dumb things and it carried over after he left. Whitner did take some shots that were legal but dangerous...not sure what they will do with Tartt but if he can use his shoulder and stay away from heads...

Edit: it didn't help that he changed his name to Hitner...how dumb was that in an era of concussion prevention?

The more I look up about this guy the more I like the pick. nfldraftcountdown.com had him as a 3rd round pick and one of the draft magazines I got had him as I think the 6th best NB/S in the draft.
If this guy was drafted specifically to cover Jimmy Graham, I think it was mistake. Remember when the Niners drafted Jamie Winborn to cover Marshall Faulk? Not a good move. they've gotta get the best guy & worry about matchups when they have their roster.

I do remember that, but I don't necessarily think drafting a guy to better matchup with a division rival is a bad thing, especially if you're getting the right value for that player. Winborn didn't really pan out, but that shouldn't be used to knock Tartt.

Tartt was rising up draft boards fast. Most in the scouting community couldn't find a negative thing to say about the guy, other than he's from a small school. He's got the instincts, speed, size, strength, and tackling ability to be a very versatile chess piece. Football is all about creating favorable matchups. Seattle got a big one with Jimmy Graham.

I fully expected the 49ers to be pro-active and plan on how to defend Graham twice a year. We need to beat Seattle and reclaim this division. It's a brutal division, but the winner has advanced to the SB 3 years in a row. It's a big deal, and we must be able to matchup and beat the teams in the division.

Graham was constantly double teamed when Fangio went up against him. We'll see how Mangini plays him. I don't think Tartt was drafted to cover Graham 1 on 1. I don't think anyone in the league can.

Definitely don't expect anyone to cover Graham one-on-one. I just think with more teams spreading the field and airing it out than ever before (some with jumbo-sized receiving TEs like Graham), it makes sense that teams are loading up on versatile safeties as Nickel defenders to help cover all these pass catching threats, while still providing some tackling ability.

It was BPA on their board. Pop Tartt impressed allot of people at the Senior Bowl.
Samford safetyJaquiski Tartt had a good week. He is a physical safety, but showed he can hold up in coverage. In a draft class that needs that type of safety, Tartt dramatically improved his stock.
The weeks before reports were that he had an elite SEC skill set but needed to prove he could play with the increased level of competition, he proved that. He wasn't the huge reach people want to believe he was. Im sure the niners scouting department wasn't the only one he checked all the boxes for, now if you don't like the pick cause he is a safety thats a different story. But he dominated FCS and impressed at the senior bowl, only reason he wasn't in FBS was due to only playing high school football for one year. Likely would of stood out there too.

Here's a sub package that Tartt may be a part of although this is with 5 CBs and 2 safeties

NO: 0rb/2te/3wr
49ers: 7 DBs (5 CBs, 2 safeties) playing Cover 6 (or Cover 7, not sure). Cover 7 is pattern matching 3v2 on the weakside (Reid) and 4v3 on the strongside (Bethea). Graham is at the top of the screen, across from Culliver.

3rd & 8

Knowing he has help over the top from Reid, Cully gets into a trail position so that he can cover any inward breaking route, which is exactly what Graham (#80) will run on this play.

If it's an obvious passing down and distance, Tartt can play a three safety look to help cover RBs and TEs. That's an area he may be better at than Wilhoite. I'm thinking Tartt can allow Mangini to play a dime defense (4dl, 1lb, 6db) against a 3 WR set (not 4). This puts a better pass defender on the field while sacrificing run defense. Other than that, I don't see how he'll get defensive snaps as a rookie (barring injury).
^^ Thanks, thl.
When I watch this kids videos the thing I notice the most is his acceleration. He f**king flies to the ball.
I noticed one thing in his statement after the draft, that he mostly covered the slot in college.

I could see Ward moving to safety and Tartt in the nickel if Ward does not improve.

Great example thank you.
That's is more "traditional football".
However, the Seahawks offense is more the backyard type when things break down. That's where I think graham is going to hurt us. When Wilson starts scrambling and graham starts moving around he is so tall he will be tough to cover.
