The Jaquiski "Pop" Tartt Gonna Rip Your Face Off Thread

They now have three young all purpose safeties who are fast enough and tough enough to play either position. They are all 23 years old and smart. Bodes well for the D for the next five to ten years.

My worry is the last time I heard a draftee say "Gee golly, I'm even surprised they took me this early!" was AJ Jenkins....

Nfl.com knows all
He's one of the draft picks that I'm most excited about. In the day and age of spread and pass heavy offense, we need guys like this. He has the ability to support the run game and cover bigger slot WRs or TEs. I'm excited for his prospect. :)

knows more than most of the people here posting about him.

Seriously doubt anyone has seen one full game of his
I don't understand all the hate. No doubt he will impress! Hope he can learn to protect his head.....we need his mindset in the secondary.

starting to warm up to this pick, tho the NFL is definitely trying to get away from these kind of hits

We clearly have different backgrounds. In my experience, ilbs and safeties both take their initial reads from the guards. The distance from the LOS would be a tough adjustment, though.

I guess we do. From what I was taught, safeties will usually key the WRs to provide help with pass coverage. Of course, it depends on the coverage call, as well as down and distance, but I have not heard of safeties keying the guards as a normal occurrence. This could allow for them to bite hard on play action.

That's the beauty of all of our experiences...they lead us to different conclusions and insights. I love defenses that use multiple sets and schemes so that no offense can get a clear idea of what's coming. When Justin Smith covers the flat...that's just so confusing to QBs...particularly lesser or younger QBs. Not sure I'd want to do that against Manning or Brady.

Not sure that both of you aren't correct and that the safeties would key on WRs and OGs to read both pass and run.

I know for sure that WRATH isn't wrong. It's simply a coaching call with regards to how he decides to teach his scheme.

About Tartt. Really glad to see he is coming into camp understanding his role (his tweet). Perhaps he'd rather go to a team that needs an immediate starter, but that isn't the case and he's accepted it. His direct competition could be his bff Ward since Bethea will hang up the cleats soon and Reid will need a partner.

Thanks, dude. I like both to read the guards as their initial read, but the response to the read is different. ILBs flow downhill as they progress to near back and QB, Safeties flow flat or gain depth as they read QB to Zone/man assignment (or vice/versa, depending on the call). LBs are run to pass and Safeties are pass to run, but it usually helps to have them take their initial direction from the guards.

I'm not sure how safeties would quickly identify run/pass without reading through the guards (usually the most likely to get a free release down the field against a 3-4) to the QB, as WRs run off CBs on so many run plays, but I'm certainly not a global authority on defensive schemes.

I'm not too concerned about him taking on guards, as he'd only be aligned as a LB when we have 4 down lineman (he's not horribly small for a 4-3 olb), and we could scheme stunts to occupy a playside guard fairly easily. I think he would have to read and react faster at LB than S, but he seems to read and go at S anyway. Obviously, it's all speculation, and there's no certainty that he would even beat out Moody for that role, if that was Baalke's intent. It's just exciting to see this many pieces, and to know that JT is actively asking his staff to scheme to the strengths of the roster and individual players with something unique to offer.

He is gonna play down in the box man, he will be in nickle packages and have to guard TEs and RBs not WRs early in his career...he also played in the Senior Bowl and handle those "scrubs" very well lol. Also he played injured all last season....go watch film when he played against Auburn and Arkansas, then tell me his a scrub. He was regarded as a 3rd round pick with upside.

No one is asking him to come in and be the starting SS that's Bethea's spot for now. Baalke values having a strong middle of the field which makes a ton of sense in the NFC West.

He will be used similar to Deone Bucannon in Zona

I think its a pretty safe bet that virtually nobody here has watched a Samford game before

This fathead is only $39.99 at Sears, he can tape it to a tackling dummy.

When you have two pro bowls safeties in front of you like @E_Reid35 and @ABethea41 you shouldn't expect to start you should expect to learn

this doot aint even coming in with an attitude of trying to start

meanwhile we got coaches telling a rookie punter its open competition against the greatest punter in 49ers history.

Or he is being smart and not burning bridges so that he can pick their brains before picking their pockets. I see him playing when they want to replace Wilhoite to support the run but cover Graham on the under if he releases with our other safties on top.

Love that mentality

Love it too...you have a chance to learn from one of the best in the games in Bethea and another in Reid and be worked into dime packages. Your time will come, no doubt. But you've got to learn the ropes first!

The way he plays indicates that being humble will not deter him from being very physical and agressive when his chance comes!
