Ouch.

It hurts but I'm glad they ripped the bandaid off. Only other option to lower his cap number would be an extension and it would be foolish to commit to an older player with foot problems.

If they drafted better recently I'd feel better about it. As far as spreading out the pain on the cap, maybe its better to take the punch this year if they arent crazy about any FA and then have a lot more to work with next year when Purdy is around the corner etc.

It sounds a bit complicated but what I read is that they he is a FA but the 49ers have a choice of releasing him now with a $2.8M cap savings for money to be used now. Or, designate him as a post-June 1 cut. AA still is FA and the 49ers save $18M in cap that can only be used post-June 1 - like when they want to do BA's new deal.

Option 1
There's a lot of dead money — $25.9 million — that must hit the salary cap here. It's now time to see if the 49ers designate Armstead for a post-June 1 release. Doing so would spread the dead money hit between the 2024 and 2025 books; $10.3 million would hit this year and the remaining $15.6 million would hit in 2025.

Option 2
A standard release of Armstead — with a $25.8 million dead cap charge — would save the 49ers just $2.5 million now but clear their books entirely of him beyond 2025.

It's tough but I think they should clear it all this year. Next Year is Brock year. Good for him but that is going to sting.

I trust Lynch and Marathe to get the most for their money, this year and next. Marathe is one of the original Cap Masters.

IMO, nobody will pay him at his old salary.

I am sorry to see AA go. He's a really underrated player and a great guy for the young players and the community.

Having said that...I understand this move from both sides. I think the team wasn't seeing the production they were expecting from him and with the uptick of injuries again(some of it seems like it could be a recurring problem) they wanted him to take a pay cut. He understandably did not.

We'll see if they're able to work something out and bring him back but I think he winds up either in Houston or Titans. Both have 49er connections and young teams where a guy who is a great leader and great example of how to be a pro would be very helpful outside of his contributions on the field.

As of now, he is off the team. Someone will sign him that is looking for a DT that can get some push on the passer. He was decent with that here. Trouble was, he wasn't good against the run.

Spotrac estimates his market value at 2 years, $10M total.

IMO, nobody will pay him at his old salary.

His "old salary" wasn't the problem. The problem resulted from kicking the can down the street to make short-term cap room. His $17M yearly salary was in line with other IDs at similar performance levels. PFF ranked him at #16.

Not saying I disagree with the move, but the run defense was straight trash when he was out this season
