We went to 3 NFCCG's and a super bowl due that physical Ronnie Lott brand of football, not this technique/finesse Deon Sander's brand of football and that is the fundamental difference when you compare Reid to Goldson.

We went to 3 NFFCG's because of our front 7. Did you forget Whitner and Goldson getting destroyed when Justin and Aldon went down during our Super Bowl run? We were giving up 30 PPG. When they got hurt at NE we gave up 34, 42, 13, 31, 24, 34. Goldson goes to the Bucs and proceeds to suck, which was no coincidence.

That was an amazing play. Reid has made some pretty spectacular plays too. What I'm getting as is Whitner/Goldson's intimidation factor was completely gone when the front 7 play dropped off. They were products of incredible players in front of them.

That front 7 also benefited from the versatility of these two safeties being able to come down into the box and rock RB's and slant routes. Something Reid can't really do. I remember watching Reid take a horrible angle on beast mode resulting in a TD. Whereas Goldson would have taken a better angle and ran right threw him instead of trying to tackle him from the side.

You're gonna single out one play? Every safety takes a bad angle from time to time. Hell, I remember Julio Jones being wide open by 10 yards for a TD in the NFCCG because Goldson completely blew the coverage assignment.

No, I think what the Niners are doing is what most teams are doing - recognizing that the old 'enforcer' way of playing strong safety is being phased out by the NFL.
