The possibility of Davis scares the hell of a lot of people. Essentially you get a Nolan defense but not as good. Or has Davis changed and improved since...

Agree, bring him back.
If not MANGINI who?
Doesn't seem to be a lot out there
Mike Pettine, he's well versed in the 3-4 and 4-3, had top 10 defenses with both.

I agree that bringing him back makes sense, if for no other reason than continuity. A new offense, and a new defense? One or the other is hard enough. Not to mention that Mangini has some level of knowledge of the offensive players from his time during his "crossover" as tight ends coach and offensive assistant consultant. There is something to be said for the team having a familiar face on the coaching staff at that level. the defensive players seem to be ok with Mangini in general too. I wasn't enamored of his units overall play last year, especially a couple of games where he just left a star opponent uncovered, knowing he was the opponents "go to" guy, but there aren't a lot of proven DC's out there looking for a job, LOL.

I think Petine got a raw deal in Cleveland, and will probably get another shot sometime soon. Kind of like Hue and Norv in Oakland. Therefore, for continuity sake, which is important for a young rebuilding roster, I think I'd rather have Mangini, or someone else who probably won't get another HC gig anytime soon.

I think Mangini is as good a choice as anybody else for the DC spot. His previous work as a DC in addition to what he was able to do with the ragtag 49ers this past season is noteworthy. Add to that his previous head coaching experience and you have a fully qualified guy. Then you add, as you've suggested, the fact he'd bring some measure of continuity and it certainly can't hurt. The question I think will be of personalities and philosophies, do they match?

im cool with him as DC
if our offense can score on the road and let the defense relax a little we could be fine
