Why? His defense is going to be ranked worse than Mangini's

Food for thought: Vic Fangio's defenses ranked in the bottom 50% of the league in pts allowed for 7 straight years - in fact, he ranked dead last in this category his last DC stint - before joining the 49ers. After his first year, it was #2 in the league.

Niner Talk criticized the hire in 2010 before of his horrific fielded defenses for multiple years - a Nolan-esque resume. And now he's a god on this forum.

Let's give Mangini a chance before we dismiss this hire. He could surprise a lot of people.

Yeesh...if that is tthe best he ever did as a DC, sorry but we could, have done better.

He has only been a DC one year. This will be his 2nd season as a DC.

Don't try to bring logic and reason into this conversation. This is the forum where the sky is falling everyday.

After what he did with backups he deserved that "title"

If Mangini was that smart/great why the hell was he coaching TE's here and not picked up by another team to actually coach something on D? Are we the only team that's aware of his greatness or did we settle for the only guy left?
Manginas such a genius but nothing more than mediocre success in the NFL...makes sense. Fangio and the real Jim are laughing for sure.

"Mangina" and "the real Jim"... Thanks for contributing with your expert opinion and support of the team
The name calling, especially something as childish as that, is something I'd expect from 12 year olds.

It's not even so much whether or not he's going to be good coach, it's that the players he's coached in the past genuinely say he's a f**king a*****e.

It's hard to re-sign players or attract free agents when you have a coach that nobody wants to play for.

To say I'm less than thrilled about the hiring would be an under statement, but when you have two dips**ts running the show you aren't left with many options.

There are tons of coaches that have coached on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. Mike Nolan, John Harbaugh, Jason Tarver are a few.

Hue Jackson coached the Bengals secondary before he moved to QB coach and now is the OC for that team. It broadens their skill set and resume.
Another classy teacher.

Last classy guy is Kiffin

Everyone uses that same logic as to "Why in the world wasn't Fangio interviewed for a HC position in any of the four years, especially after this last one, after what he accomplished?" Sometimes the staffing hires or non-hires just happen. No real explanation for it all the time.
I posted this in the DC thread, thought maybe it would be relevant here and maybe some missed it.

Prior to becoming the defensive coordinator for the 49ers, Fangio's defenses only cracked the top 10 twice.
