This. He got rocked hard on his catch, hit in the helmet, no flag but whatever. Another tough catch made by him.

Like I said before, this kid is the future!!

Too bad we went Five Wide yesterday (vs Arizona) and his #46 didn't get his number called as often as VD woulda had..

Meh. 49ers wouldn't have had to keep bringing Looney in at TE if Carrier could block nearly as well as McDonald does. Carrier is a nice receiving threat, he reminds me of Luke Wilson from the Seahawks, nice guy to make the occasional catch downfield but not yet a complete tight end.

Exactly, I second that....

lol only if that were true, but I noticed we had to bring in that extra o-lineman a lot. He's not that great of a blocker.

It's like people forget that a big part of playing TE is your blocking skills, if all you had to do was catch, you'd be a WR, not a TE.
This guy marvels me every week, like Phoenix said (the dude has to sharpen his blocking skills), but Derek really, really reminds me a lot of Jay Novacek of the 90s Cowboys in terms of abilities/size. Jay Novacek was also drafted late, fell through the cracks of other teams because he wasn't the best blocker/scheme guy until the right offensive coordinator (in Norv turner) sharpened him out, and used his size/abilities as a perennial run-blocking TE, and gutsy possession receiver.

Not saying Carrier is gonna be the 'next' Jay Novacek, or that he'll reach those heights (cause Jay Novacek is in 'my eyes' is a HOF TE, next to Brent Jones), but I think Carrier has found a 'permanent' home. This dude isn't gonna fade away like a Justin Peelle, or Garrett Celek.

Baalke sure f**ks up on draft picks, but he's ace on FA 'depth' pick-ups.

2Q 2nd & 10

49ers run a slight variation of the Shallow Cross concept. Instead of a Drag (shallow crossing route) + an In route, they use a drag + a Post. It is designed to get a hi-low read over the middle of the field.
CHI: cover3

Carrier head fakes to the outside. This head fake is to prevent the underneath zone defender (orange) from getting a shove on Carrier as Carrier runs by him. Normally, all underneath zone defenders are asked to slightly shove any WRs that run by them in order to slow them down a bit before the WR enters the safety level. Perhaps the enforcement of the 5 yard illegal contact rule played a part in why the orange defender doesn't shove Carrier. The line of scrimmage is the 30 so a shove could have happened at the 25, it would have been a close call. The key defender for Kap to read is the blue defender. Blue will be the vertically stretched defender.

If blue gains depth, he will block the passing lane to Carrier, and VD is available. If blue comes forward, he will defend VD's crossing route, but open up space for Carrier. Blue is shown coming forward with his attention drawn to VD. The correct throw is to Carrier on the Post route.

Take a hit to make a play.

Great post

I figure out when I saw #33 (Bears defense) his hands push to Crabtree that he got hurt his hands. He did hit hard on Carrier after he push to Crabtree. He got hurt his hands. I got it now.. Hahaha.. I think, Carrier is rock body.. .. U see him right his hand hit on Carrier. Then he got hurt his right hand that push on Crabtree.. Now. I got it.. Haha

I lived in Dallas when Jay Novacek was a Cowboy. He was notorious for dating high school girls.

Sorry, as good as Jay Nova was, he isn't as athletic as this kid is.. I remember how Reid marveled about Carrier during the off season.. that he had a hard a time covering him one on one, and even on the 7 on 7 drill..

Reid went out of his way by saying that this kid is like a basketball player out there, an athlete playing football... he even said that he reminds him of the Saint's Graham..

Jay Nova was good, but he wasn't fluid.. Aikman loved Nova because of the fact that he knew how to work the underneath route.. It was really Nova who was Troy's security blanket..

and in my opinion, if Harbaugh can find ways to use Carier more often and call his numbers to give him more chance to compete and enlarge his cnfidence, I would not be surprise to see Vernon on another uniform in less than 2 years..
Damn i miss Delanie
