Like it or not the Seahawks are the better team at this time. If we lose the division the Super Bowl dream is over. The 49ers aren't going into Seattle and win a playoff game.

I agree completely with all of this. Against many wishes on here I think at this point I would have to really step up efforts to move on Revis, I think more so now because of the all around gains Seattle has made on both sides of the ball. They can't afford to play games with musical secondary or trial and error.

yea i agree, i don't think dahl will every be as good as goldson, with that said we could have just drafted special teams players, this one is a head scracher.

the player acquisition/team building component part of the offseason is not even half way done there's still the draft and just because there are/were some recognizable names doesn't mean that they were the best fit (locker room,contract, or skill set). our St coverage units were terrible and baalke has addressed it (the honey badger is too light in the arse to help there not to mention that we already have return specialist in kw and lmj. so i find it highly unlikely that the 5'7 170lb guy can fill the same role as the 6' 200lb guy no matter how much coaching up you attempt. Talib is a head case, cromartie is a piss poor tackler, and nnamdi over the last couple of seasons has been exposed.

There are two holes in this statement which skews your logic.

1. Using the Skuta example as proof that Dahl is not a replacement. You would have a good point if say we lost one of our MLB's and the FO signed Skuta before finding a formidable replacement. Because that is the situation as far as the safety position. But we lost a very important piece in our secondary and we sign a potential 3rd string safety after watching 5 or 6 days of decent DB's fall off of the board? Thats next to stupidity.

2. Hoping the Niners "find the next Goldson in April". This is a move that would be best if we either won the SB or are in a rebuilding stage. It is not astute to not reach the zenith, then put complete faith in coaching a rookie on the fly and expect him to perform as well as Goldson in hostile playoff conditions, and have the same impact. Its more unreasonable than anything.

If the 9ers have strong confidence in signing Darrelle Revis, Woodson or Reed, only then will the rookie or Dahl be understandable. Anything other than that, It would seem that we have a strictly gem searching for much of nothing FO like the Patriots. Using that formula will get you to 2nd of 3rd place, but not the promise land.

To your points:

1. The DB's that signed before we signed Dahl........how much did they sign for? The Niners signings are all modest dollar signings. Baalke is more inclined to build through the draft rather than make a big dollar free agent signing. The reason why they let Goldson hit the market is they knew someone was willing to pay him $ 8 million per and they were not.

2. Our secondary was torched in the playoffs, including Goldson (.....remember Julio Jones in ATL). You have to trust that Baalke will sign another reasonably priced free agent or be able to find the best coverage FS in the draft. It's not over yet.

you can cherry pick anything whether it be video or print media to justify your hate for a player , whom we have never seen in a niner uniform, if you just want to throw up your hands and say this player is garbage and we will suck because the coaches and front office, chose not to allow some guy to hold a gun to our heads, knock your self out.

Really? Thanks for the education, glad we have you to reassure how the core of a team is built. Adding a player in free agency, key word "A", to the secondary isn't asking to break the bank or expect unrealistic contract offers. It's obvious who needs to be signed and who we need cap space for. So I can just disregard a concern for the current secondary because "we have a ton of picks" sorry, there's still a hole in the defense that could use veteran leadership with more skill than what is currently on the roster. What impact do you think one of the ton of draft picks will have as a rookie this year?..

It's not an education it's a fact we will continue to build through the draft because that's how you stay out of cap hell. I do think the draft is secondary heavy and I do think there are guys to come in and start right away and apparently Baalke feels the same way. There are guys we must be high on, coverages don't change in college and NFL, I definitely think we will draft some high impact players.

I just don't think this move makes much sense.

Safety is one of the most challenging positions for a rookie to learn coming into the NFL and unless we are prepared to see a lot of blown coverages in the secondary we don't want to be depending on our draft pick to man that position. So we still need to sign a veteran FS (like Michael Huff or Kerry Rhodes) and we now have that much less cap space to do this.

This move would make sense if we needed depth a safety, but our problem isn't depth, we need a starting caliber replacement. We already have CJ Spillman who was our best special teamer the past couple years, Trenton Robinson, Michael Thomas from the practice squad + a likely high draft pick on a safety. If we keep Dahl and Spillman and our draft pick, we have to cut Robinson who might be important to keep since we'll be losing Whitner next year. And how many special teamers can we really afford to keep at one position anyways? If we cut Spillman we replace one good special teams player for another.

No 3 years for 5 million isn't a lot of money. But when we have holes to fill and limited cap space to do it every dollar counts and spending money on a guy who isn't starting material and has a good chance of being cut is a questionable move at this point imo.

If you were worried about a rookie playing safety and blowing coverages, just look at the Falcons game tape and you will see our former Pro Bowl safety let Julio Jones run right by him for the initial score of the game. It happens to everyone now and again. Having a rookie start at QB before last year was considered ridiculous and look at how that turned out for the Dolphins, Colts, Redskins and Seahawks. You either trust that Baalke will pick up a great FS in the draft capable of starting or you don't.

Dahl's deal really only has the Niners on the hook for $ 800k guaranteed money. It will be a straight up competition among him, Robinson, Thomas, Spillman and whomever else they add to the mix. Next man up as far as I'm concerned. It may not be the fantastic move that we have come to expect from our front office, but it doesn't scare me either.

This was for depth and think that the 49ers will go after another safety through the 2013 draft.

The Jets will require a 1st round pick he is not a free agent and yes it's documented that he thinks he's worth that much, it would be a holdout nightmare signing him and resigning our own. IT'S NOT HAPPENIN!

Exactly. If anyone really wanted to, they could put together a very horrible collection of Dashon Goldson moments as well. What's the point? Evidently the point is freaking out, channeling Chicken Little, assuming you have a better handle on how to manage a team than Trent Baalke, etc. etc. etc.

When Baalke took over there was no other way to go but up. The organization was in the basement for the last decade. This. The outrage over Dahl's signing is over the top. The money is very reasonable for a guy who can provide solid depth and can be a key special teams player. You would think he just got 20M guaranteed for christ sake. Obviously, the Niners do not think spending a ton of money on old players makes a lot of sense.
