If they had not released Brooks and Harold had gotten a season ending injury tomorrow, I think it is likely that they would have kept Brooks for the year. Waiting till the end of the season to let Brooks go would have made more sense from the perspective of the team hedging their bets against Harold getting injured in the preseason. This sure seems like Lynch and Shanahan doing a solid for Brooks.

NFL.com I'm s reporting they were trying to trade Brooks for two weeks. This means they decided to part ways with Brooks before any preseason game. It's his contract and nothing else.

It looks like they tried holding onto Brooks to try to trade him. Nobody wants that contract. But they decided, at best, after OTAs that Brooks wasn't in the plans anymore.
