"You think of guys that might not be as good in Week 1 but you think they'll be ready in Week 3. What gives you the best chance to win in Week 1 and Week 8 and Week 16? You've got to play all that into account. It's rarely as simple as saying it's the starter versus the backup, versus the third string guy. It has to do with the overall 53. When you start to position stuff on guys you want to make the roster and you don't want to lose guys to other teams if you put them on practice squad or things like that. All that goes into account. So, when we start to look at the 53 and see some of the guys we'd have to lose by keeping people, that ends up making you lead to that type of decision.""

It is almost as if they are employing an inherently logical approach to this. People b***hed when the old regime dumped promising younger players in favor of rapidly aging veterans, now people are b***hing when the new regime is looking to hold on to younger players at the expense of older players who don't figure into the team's long terms plans.

Bottom line, people are going to b***h no matter what any given 49ers HC or GM end up doing.

Who would you cut to keep a 33 year old LB who would only be a 49er for one more season? Brooks was either done now, or he was done at the end of this season. Retaining him would mean cutting a young player like Pita that the team might not feel confident about hiding on the practice squad.

Brooks wasn't going to be here in 2018. So, why keep him around in a bad year? Need to play the young guys.

I'll always remember him for that sack against Brees that the refs botched. That team could have gone far that postseason but that one play screwed our season.

Yup the refs screwed us, he won the appeal.. I believe we would have had a first round bye with that win? We would have won the tie breaker with Seattle

Yeah to these
To the fucha!!!!

Lol, we are really heading into the season with Eli and Dakota Watson as our Sam backers. I'm having a moment of clarity about how bad our defense will continue to be.

We probably need another draft cycle to replenish a depleted defense. It wasn't going to be done in one year. Kyle's gambling that his offense can take the lead in the first half, and he's counting on his nickel defense to stifle the teams trying to catch up. I think he's going to rely on his nickel defense to win us some games, and so he'll have to shift his scarce resources to that nickel, hence out with Ahmad and in with Pita and whoever is better at rushing the passer or is younger and can develop into a pass rusher.

We are sort of playing a big nickel. I think we will be fine.

Good point.
the linebacking corps were one of the best. Now witht he loses of brooks and smith, those are two key pieces missing.
This is a long view move. Baalke had a soft spot for older veteran types at certain positions and Brooks was one of those players.

With the team going in a new direction it was time to move on to clear the pipeline to see what you got with the young players that will factor more into the future than a 33 year old LB.

When Shanahan and Lynch came in signing 6 year deals that usually means there will be an increased emphasis on player development and coaching that doesn't afford a young team the luxury of potentially losing good young players to the waiver wire in order to keep a veteran with one year left on his deal.

Bill Walsh theory - Better to get rid of them early, than to hang onto them for too long.
Somehow- Someway, He'll end up in Seattle. Take that to the bank! lol I don't care if he does or doesn't fit. he'll be wearing the puke ugly uniform sooner or later!!!!

I dunno, the days of the big linebackers may be fading as the new defenses take over. Linebackers have to be more like defensive backs than run stoppers nowadays. The Pete Carroll defense is essentially a nickel defense.

Repsect to Brooks, he balled out for us..........cheers to the guy
I liked Brooks in college and wanted him as a supplement draft pick. He worked hard to be an everyday starter. He also made some huge plays for us. He was the most underrated guy in a core that had 3 potential HOFers.

He will always have my respect, and he'll always be a niner in my book
