No, not at all. Small picture reaction.

At best
That hit on Brees that made his neck look like Mike Glennon's was my favorite play of his even though he got that BS roughing call.

Brooks was a stud in his day, but those days are long over. There's no room for sentimentality when rebuilding a roster. Time to move on.

This X 1,000.

Nobody's safe on a team that finished with two wins last year.
Eli may not be as good as Brooks is now, but he's got the potential to be just as good if not better. Brooks already had his day.
Our defense is going to teem with youth. Which means they're gonna get run over at first. But watch out after the first eight games.
Rebuilding a franchise is never easy, yet it's essential after a two win season.

VERY good post billbird!

I made the same point in another thread awhile back. I expect the first half the season to be frustrating. Lot's of flashes but plenty of stumbles. My hope is that they start to gel and finish on a positive note. Maybe play the spoiler for some teams in the playoff hunt.

Agree Blues.

The first 8 games will show some inexperience and bloopers.

S what - that's part of how you learn.

The next *, IMO, will show lots of positive growth signs.
We're seriously starting Eli Harold over a proven commodity?

Harold can't push the pocket and gets stuffed on every snap I watch him in. This is a mistake.

Agreed. There's nothing to suggest Eli will ever be as good as Brooks is now. How much under the salary cap do the Niners have to be? We didn't spend much of what we had this off-season.

There was nothing to suggest that Brooks would ever be particularly good when he bounced from Cincy two years after being drafted. Some times guys just need to find the right scheme for them. That could be the case for Harold, as obviously the coaching staff appears to be happy with him.

If it isn't then hey, there's $5 more million in cap space to roll over to sign or re-sign players and they know that SAM will be a need either in free agency or the draft. Not sure why people are falling all over each over to kick the last bit of dirt on a guy that none of us are remotely qualified to evaluate, if we were, we'd be getting paid by an NFL team right now.

Whether Harold plays well or he flops, Brooks wasn't going to be around for much longer no matter what.

Did anyone not see this coming? The club saves $5 million or so. Gives a young guy the opportunity to show if he can contribute in Eli, if not then the search starts. Sorry to say but the next in line are both Reid and Bowman if they don't produce enough.

oh nvm there it is

Why do people get mad at facts?
Brooks was a good player for us for a long time. In that respect it's kind of a bummer to see him go, but it was probably time. I noticed Harold looked more explosive and athletic in the pre-season games, and while that doesn't mean he's sure to be a better player than Brooks, it's time to see what Harold has got. Also opens up a roster spot to keep another d-lineman. That's where the toughest cuts will be made. We want to keep as many quality DL as possible.

If you look at the pre-season so far, it looks like both have done a great job. I believe Reid earns his extension this year.

Well yeah but if there was a tie in competition then just go with the cheaper version. Brooks looked like he was playing to keep his current contract number with the team. Anyhow, if Reid earns an extension then that means he had a productive year which is good. I just hope he doesn't earn a new contract and mails it in.
our offsides penalties just dropped by 75%

he'll get injured again.
He was a good guy, and he checked two out of three boxes:

Set the Edge, check
Rush the passer, check
Cover backs and ends, no so much.

It appears to me, that covering receivers was considered more important in this new scheme, or finding ways to cover Brooks's one weak spot was not a task the new staff was willing to take on.
