I really believe this is a move with an eye towards the future, as in, not this year.

Well, nobody has said it ,but we won't carry 4 qBs, nor should we, and i think you KAP fans may very well be in for a surprise. Tolz is ready now, as he showed last PS. The JJ signing tells me KAP has all the tools, but is not what Coach H and baalke thot he was. Harbaugh has hx with JJ, but it is KAP who i think is on the block. I could be wrong and everyone else right, but this is a bizarre signing...unless, H& B don't like what they see NOT happening with KAP. I can't explain it otherwise. Of all the guys they could have signed, OL, DB, CB, RB, and WR...and we sign a backup QB?
Man, something is wrong here, and it has to be KAP's not making the grade. This looks like pure and simple insurance, with Tolz #2, and JJ #3....and KAP adios. If so, i hope we can get something for him, like a swap with someone else for first rd pick. Our #30 might just as well have been a high 2nd rounder. Kap could make the difference there, and if so, B& H already have someone in mind, who wanted KAP during draft, and now is willing to swap places with us in first rd. That could explain adding another insurance qB. Obviously, it also could be Tolz, but he is game ready, and i think that is the concern...that KAP isn't .

Sir, I am tempted to propose a name change bet with you regarding this.

I am in teh grade four.

Over all, a great signing. Like the kid and think he's going to surprise peeps during camps and preseason. Will be fun to see how all these QBs do during preseason when they get their chance. I would expect that all three will get a chance with the 1s at some time just to see how they behave. I know Harbaugh likes to do that.
Again, the increased competition will make this QB unit stronger.
This.

Thats a big jump man. I think it is more about increasing competition and depth at the position. Also, we had two rookies as backups. If they were needed, that would have been hectic. JJ adds depth and a little veteran savy, while making the other QBs work hard.

You are leaping to conclusions.
Yeah, it's entirely possible that JH saw that one of his guys was flaoting in the market, since TB signed Orlovsky as their new #2 and his only other visit was w/WAS, who might be a little invested in the QB position shortly. If no one else is gonna give the guy a shot, why not roll the balls out there and see who pushes themselves out of the pack. I think they are still pretty impressed with Kaepernick, since they didn't freak out and throw money at Alex when he went to see MIA or scramble to bring in a FA immediately to ensure against Kaep having to start this year. I think they know he would take his lumps, but this team is built to help a developing QB.

We have been very poor at QB for a decade, no real NFL starters, no depth behind them. I was pleased last season with our QB stable, like a staving man given a couple of crackers, I thought we finally had some depth and talent. Harbuagh seems to be preparing a feast! He is not content, ever! I would have been fine going into this season with a serviceable Alex Smith, showing some upside, CK looking like the QB of the future, and Tolzien, waiting and learning...but not the new look Niner front office, I love this move, it shows we are serious about adding talent and competition at every position!

Yup.
Further evidenced by the "easy out" from Smith's contract after this season.

Okay JJ who is a backup QB at the Bucs, comes to the Niners to be third string. Somehow I dont think so. He is coming to back up AS this year and is going to give AS a run for his money next year. With that being said there is no way CK is going to accept a 3rd string role. He is not a 3rd stringer we all know that. I have a feeling CK is going to be traded before this draft for a better draft position. Going into training camp AS will be the starter, JJ will be his backup and ST will bring up the rear. CK is the only QB on the Niners that has trade value. This is just a thought that I think is going to happen.

I believe you may be over-thinking this. In reality we knew another QB was going to be brought in so why not bring in somebody with best opportunity to push the others as opposed to another pure developmental player? Also, I'm not sold that the Tolzmeister is ready to go as you suggest. He could be destined for the PS.

I understand most everyone's reluctance to think KAP may be odd man out. But Tolz was ready last PS, and KAP was raw. Also we traded up for Kap, so there had to be someone else with him on their radar. That is who i think has called B&H, and expressed interest in Kap. I don't see Coach trading away Tolz, who could come in and play well enough not to hurt us. The few mop ups Kap got in this yr, were not encouraging. Tolz was obviously way more ready. I still think this JJ thing is to move up , probably for fleener, unless another of the top 3 or 4 WRs are still there. This looks to be a really talent laden draft, and i bet Coach has his eye on another guy also, maybe OL, that he would move up for . We need to have something to offer, tho, and that's why i think it is Kap. Just supposition, guys, just guessing.
The striking thing about the JJ acquisition is that i don't buy into his being brot in to stir up competiton. Alex is plenty motivated, and you don't bring in another qb to spur on the #2 and #3 Qbs. There has to be something else going on for JJ to be signed, and my guess is it means moving up in exchange for a player we have.
