JJ ran Harbaughs WCO three years at SD for big numbers and should run it easily by the time the season rolls around. Another great back up and possibly more. Harbaugh/Baalke strike again!

remember how nervous we all were last year if Alex were to get hurt?

heres our insurance policy.

Well, now there is someone who can run harbs offense if... I don't say it.

Nice backup possible signing. He has showed nothing in his career than a backup role.

Is this not Troy Smith 2.0? Troy Smith was cut by BALT after three years of backup duty. Baalke signed him and some of you thought we had picked up an overlooked treasure. Well, we saw how that turned out.

Twoyears later, and Ballke's at it again. JJ is a four year backup and is cut loose by TB. I looked at TB's roster. After Josh Freeman, they have Rudy Carpenter and Brett Ratliff (who?) as Freman's backup QBs , in preference to JJ. How much of an endorsement is that? To me, the evidence is that he is a camp arm, not much more.

First Baalke wasn't GM then so nobody knows if he was behind the Troy signing or not. 2nd I bet Baalke didn't have anything to do with this signing. I bet Harbaugh was behind it 100% since he coached JJ in college.

What does it matter anyway? Would you rather not have him take any chances? I'd rather him swing and miss in free agency than to not try anything at all especially for backup players. Plus more importantly this is just competition for the #2 and #3 QB spots.

The Josh Johnson signing confirms two things: 1.) Jim Harbaugh loves competition. 2.) The 49ers aren't committed to A Smith long term.

JJ said that Jim told him he wasn't in competition with AS for the starting job. Looks more like he wanted a competitior for Kaep/Tolzien.

Most likely. Johnson hasn't done crap in the pros. Even on bad teams against all odds Smith has looked like a starting NFL QB during his first 6 years. Can't say that aout Johnson.

Wow....thats almost as impressive as being in the league 6 years and not being able to help your team crack .500, in the NFC West no less.

I know, I know. Alex is the only one to have legitamenty poor circumstances.

Josh Johnson will be a decent back-up for this team. Still think in the end they cut Tolzien lose & it will just be Alex, Kaep & Johnson. I don't mind this addition at all.

Singletary wanted Troy Smith, not our FO, it was his decision......

Baalke had nothing to do with that decision.
this is no diff from when you get a new offensive coordinator and they hire one of their old guys for a back up spot, example, J.T. O' Sullivan, it has no bearing on alex smith at all, harbaugh prob would have gotten him last year if he was a FA

Not necessarily.

My speculation is that he was signed to be the #3 QB this year (probably told he would compete for #2) and to give us an established veteran back-up to Kaepernick next season if Smith flops this season.

It's all just speculation at this point from all of us, though. We'll just have to wait and see how things go in camp and preseason.

I extremely excited to see how all of our QBs play.

way to turn JJ into an Alex thing. but you arent trolling right.
Besides looking good against the Niners in one PRESEASON game, what has Tolzien done to earn such high praise? Another solid signing by the front office that makes the team and the QB position better.
