But he scares the s**t out of me and I don't think I want him at #7.

I hear ya....he does have everything you want a qb to have....added that he is 6'6 250 and 4.5 to boot, he can change the NFL....yes Im not sure if I want him....but
i would love it if Harbaugh deems his talent and potential worthy

Ron Rivera will be personally on hand for Cam Newton's Pro Day Tuesday, meaning he probably will NOT see Ryan Mallett http://bit.ly/gKIdAY
hoping for cam to throw lights out so someone higher up will take him, and a better player drops down to us...

With Palmer being out in Cincy one way or another, I can see the Bengals targeting Gabbert or Newton (whoever is still available). They'll sign a veteran caretaker like Jake Delhomme or Jon Kitna (2nd tour of duty) while the new kid is brought along.

Agree. Everything we hear coming out of Cincy is that they are considering Palmer to be retired. Consequently, they will not get any trade value for him so will have to go FA and draft. The key will be if Carolina goes QB. If that happens I think we could see a run on QBs that will leave people gasping at how high some of this mediocre talent goes. REACH

You don't think Harbaugh could work with that kind of athlete, and eventually turn him into something special in a west coast offense????
In college I think Jimmy could adapt an offense to fit CN's skills and be successful... but in the NFL the QB must be a rapid decision maker and be right a majority of the time and you can't really have a QB run an offense tailored to CN's skillset and have him healthy 16 (or 18) games...

No NFL coach is going to develop an offensive system tailored to a running QB; there might be tweaks here and there, but we won't see a full-on, Gus Malzhan, read-option spread anytime soon. That's not going to happen.

However, the WCO can (and has for years) take advantage of a running QB, so Harbaugh can bring a guy like Newton along slowly and allow him to absorb the system over a year or so before unleashing him on the NFL.

Again, think about what Walsh did with Joe...little playing time in his first year while he absorbed the concepts/playbook, much more playing time in his 2nd season, finally becoming the franchise QB in his 3rd year.

If people believe the rookie QB should come in right away and take the reigns, they will be very disappointed.

Ghost, question for you.

Based on your comments, you seem very high on Newton. You and another poster were adamantly defending Newton when I made a comment that I didn't want him on the 49ers. In the webzone draft thread when drafting for this team, you took Gabbert over Newton.

Do you rate them Gabbert 1 and Newton 2? Just curious, as critics of Newton are dealing with certain veiled accusations (not from you, that I recall anyway).

In the right system, with the right coaching staff and talent around him, I believe Cam can grow into one of the better QBs in the league. He has that much talent. But if those things aren't in place, and if he's rushed on to the field without the proper grooming, he'll develop bad habits and rely to much on his athleticism as opposed to growing into a real QB.

I would rate Gabbert higher than Newton simply because there are less questions around his game and his personality (he's the cleaner overall prospect). Overall, I see the QBs ranked this way:

1.) Gabbert - (proto-type QB in just about every aspect)
2.) Ponder - (more pro-ready, and nice fit for a WCO)
3.) Newton - (off-the-charts skill-set)
4.) Mallet - (Perfect Raider QB in just about every way)
5.) Locker - (Will need time, but can develop into a very good WCO)
