Holmgren was hired in late December, unlike a coach you don't have to wait till the off season to hire a team president or GM. If we wait till the off season and then hire a GM who would hire the coach (i really do not want our next coach bringing in their GM) then we could lose out on coaches, while we wait to find a GM.

Sigh...........

Cleveland was able to name Holmgren president when they did because he was out of football. Which GM that is NOT under contract with another team should they rush to hire?

Your statement about hiring a GM couldn't be anymore false. You have to wait until the offseason if you are hiring an executive under contract with another team whether it's a promotion or a lateral move.

Ummmm you only have to wait till the teams season is over not wait to the off season. Coaches will be hired quickly so if we take your advice to wait till the off season to look for a GM, we will get stuck with a bad coach.

9. In a few months time, the football world -- provided he declares for the NFL draft -- will be fawning over the talents of Andrew Luck. And word is, Luck might try and take some level of control over where he lands, with his father Oliver riding shotgun like Archie Manning did with Eli in 2004. It's hard to blame him, if you really look at it. Much as everyone looks at quarterback as the game's most important position, and it is, a young player's ability to perform at that spot is dependent on the other 10 offensive players on the field. The NFL graveyard is littered with quarterbacks thrown into poor situations (David Carr, Alex Smith, etc.). And on the flip side, you have Matt Ryan, who was managed perfectly by Falcons GM Thomas Dimitroff and coach Mike Smith. Ryan, a five-year college player to begin with, walked into a situation where the GM made it a priority to have his left tackle (Sam Baker) and workhorse tailback (Turner) in place to take the pressure off. Dimitroff even signed kicker Jason Elam, to buoy Ryan's confidence with more drives, even short ones, ending in points. So is it any surprise that, with a victory Monday night, Ryan will tie Dan Marino for the most wins by a quarterback in his first three years? It shouldn't be. Ryan's good. And lucky to have come into a great situation.

Linkage

Gives me hope. The team needs to pull out all stops to land Harbaugh, and then have the nuts pay the price for Luck.

We pull that and this team is on its way back to it's rightful place in the upper echelon of the NFL.

Isn't that the essense of what I'm trying to say? [the end of a team's season is their offseason] If we're on the same page, there's nothing wrong with what I said. Ever heard of the Rooney Rule? [I believe it extends to front office positions]

I believe you are incorrect. Rooney rule is HC only to my recollection.

It does apply to football operations as well. One reason why Baalke wasn't promoted to GM is because of the rule according to a Maiocco/Barrows article.

Baalke was not promoted to GM because he lacks finances knowledge, it had nothing to do with Rooney. Not saying your wrong about the rule, but you are for sure about why Baalke is not GM.
1. Holmgren

Unless the Yorks hire a real GM first and let him hire a HC and assistants, the future holds nothing but FAILURE!!!

I remember that recent interview Ralph did with Eddie D'
Eddie seemed to emphasize the need for a GM, and im sure he's in Jed's ear about it

weather we hire a GM or HC first, I think there is a good chance the two will have already worked together or know each other

DeCosta's name is starting to pop around here for good reason.
as Ozzies assistant in Baltimore, he's learned from one of the very best,
Ive read his strength is player evaluation, so maybe Parage could still have his bean counter job, but DeCosta would have final say on the roster makeup

Two possible leading candidates for our HC job ..Harbaugh and Billick both have connections with him, though much more so with Billick

I have a feeling its going to be Billick and DeCosta running this team
with them retaining Johnson as the OC
bringing in soon to be unemployed Marvin Lewis to run the D'
and the the Cinci ST coach Simmons

That was a fantastic interview. Interesting to see Eddie D really echoing what a lot of fans have been saying about the need for experience in the front office. I agree with you that he's in Jed's ear, you could hear the emotion in his voice.

Paraag Marathe has been handling the financial side of the franchise for something like 7 years or so. He was doing so when McCloughan was the GM. Your reasoning is false.

*A former Super Bowl winning coach turned broadcaster not named Bill Cowher might be coming back to the NFL next year. There are some rumblings former Ravens coach Brian Billick could get back in. One team that could make sense for Billick is the 49ers. He grew up in California, was drafted by the 49ers and worked in the team’s public relations office before he got into coaching.

Adam Schefter said he keeps hearing Harbaugh will be heading to Michigan...

It's NFL coaching-bate, many experts think Michigan isn't really that crazy about Harbaugh.

Harbaugh is gonna be the 49ers HC of 2010 after we clean the FO in Jan. -My gut tells me the 49ers are gonna bank 50% of their draft from this year to trade up for Andrew Luck (with Carolina) in April.
