Harbaugh MAY become a good NFL coach, but not anyone here can say that he will be a good NFL coach. My guess is that he goes to Carolina and then they take Andrew Luck #1 overall. Harbaugh has far and away the best QB in college football. If he comes here, he will have a bottom 5 QB.
My mini mock would be to get Holmgren, trade for Kolb (2nd and maybe 4th this year and 2nd in 2012) take a CB (patrick peterson/prince amukamara) in the 1st round.
Hopefully there will be a solid pass rusher available in free agency we can get too. We do that, I definitely see playoffs in 2011 and beyond.
I don't know man? Jim Harbaugh may not be a bad option. He's a young, offensive-minded coach who runs a version of the WCO, a base 3-4 defense, and most of his assistant coaches (who have NFL experience) would probably come with him. He comes from a coaching family, (his brother John is the Ravens HC and his Dad was a football coach for many years!) and from everything I've read, Jim is very well respected around the NFL.
Many people believe that he is an up and coming coach, and it's is only a matter of time before he comes back to the NFL. Jim Harbaugh should also be credited with helping develop QB Andrew Luck, who many of us believe will be the 1st overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft! It's almost a no brainer! What happens if we pass up the opportunity to hire him, then he goes to another team and has success? We'll be kicking ourselves for years!
Let me flip that on you Pat, what if we choose Harbaugh over Holmgren/Gruden? And Harbaugh turns into another failure of a college coach transitioning to the NFL and we see Holmgren/Gruden doing well somewhere else? Wouldn't we be kicking ourselves?
Harbaugh is a high risk/high reward type of hire. We get Holmgren we know we are getting ourselves a great coach with tons and tons of experience. I just don't see a downside to getting Holmgren if we can.

I don't think Harbaugh is high risk at all.

and most likely a .500 record with Holmgren in his first year and he will probably not coach more then 4-5 seasons. So unless you think he wins a Superbowl really quickly here i do not see the point.

Everything you said is YOUR opinion. I could say, Holmgren gets us to the playoffs and he stays for 10 years. What makes either of our statements right or wrong?

When did i try to make it out to be a fact? But my OPINION is based on him being 63 next season, hasn't coached in three years and has never coached a team to more then 9 wins in his first three years.

So what? 9 wins should be plenty in our division...

My OPINION is getting a proven HC is better than gambling on a college coach. The only downside you can point to is he maybe leaves in 5 years? So what if he hasn't won more than 9 games in his first 3 years, every situation is very different, all i know is he has gotten his teams to many many playoffs, couple of Superbowls and brought home a Lombardi trophy.
With Harbaugh you don't know what you're getting.

Okay... You want a proven coach.... lets just bring back George Seifert, I'm sure he would love to coach the 49ers again, and unlike Mike Holmgren he is undefeated in the Superbowl!

isn't Seifert like 75 years old? I wouldn't mind him as President of Football Ops maybe he could bring in the ATL Assistant HC Bill Musgrave who I think he worked with in Carolina.

Its looking less and less likely that Jeff Fisher will be back with Tennessee next year... He is pretty much the exact coach Sing wants to be..... I wouldn't want him as our next head coach... anyone disagree?

Fisher would top my list for sure, if he were available.
Brian Billick just said that he co-wrote a book on coaching with Bill Walsh. That's pretty interesting. I think Billick is a real candidate as well.
