Its pretty obvious what the plan is. They have all but come out and said that this guy doesn't have the instincts or coordination to play DB at the professional level. You can't give every player you draft 3-4 years to develop when your coaching intuition says he won't ever be able to do it.

Nope we can already come to the conclusion that he sucks and can't cut it in this league because it is impossible for him to develop because he is not fluid in his hips and he will never get better at coverage. His 6'3 235 pound frame, 4.24 speed, and hard hitting ability are irrelevant because he lacks the 'instincts' necessary to play safety. He'll just never be able to read quarterbacks and flip his hips quick enough. We should give up on him now because we all know it's impossible for him to become quicker and more instinctual. Let's trade him for a pile of s**t because that would be the smart thing to do rather than taking the huge risk of keeping him around a bit longer to see if he can progress.

Loving the sarcasm!

That's all his trade value is after that "mass email" charade.
Well, if nothing else the fact that he is down on the depth chart here and nobody else was eager to get him, he may concentrate and try harder and become useful. I wouldn't want to block him on special teams for example. And if he works hard and people get injured, then he is in and hopefully can contribute. It may work out in some way or another.
Are people still b*tching about the email? It's not unheard of and has happened before by agents and GMs alike. The latest example.

put it to bed, its not a big deal. "Sources from other teams" are always gonna take pot shots at other front offices when given the chance, its a competitive environment and if you can paint another front office in a bad light it may help in the future, not that surprising.

Most of these guys b***hin are just Mays fans that cannot see the kid doesn't have the coverage instincts to be as great as they see him in their minds. All they see is a safety from USC and suddenly he is Ronnie 2.0. The guy was all hype and no substance, he might be able to improve, and since we spent a second rounder on him, we should work his ass off in practice and hope someday he learns to play.. No one in the league is going to give us anywhere close to what we spent on him, unless we can pull and eagles move and trade him for way more than he is worth to the Cards, they seem to like sucker bets.

Maybe we just wanna see him get the patience given to Alex Smith. If its a lack of instincts there are 2 starters in Soap and Alex that have shown to have near 0 instincts for their positions they play. Mays could develop into a quality starter this year or next with proper coaching. Why cut him now when Fangio has had little time to watch him work and never watched any film on him? The whole situation involving the trade seems very sketchy imo.

It's all just a diabolical plot to frustrate you, jimmy.

If he didn't want to trade Mays, why did he send out a mass email to all teams? This is unheard of in the business. It's not how things are done. If he wanted to trade Mays, he needed to identify potential trade partners (usually teams that might have a need as well as an asset worth getting back in return), and then contact those teams individually and negotiate.

How did he undercut himself? He broadcasted an email to the entire league, and word of it immediately leaked everywhere, so any potential trading partners immediately knew he was being shopped indiscriminately and thus did not have much value to the 49ers. That immediately made his value drop to basically nothing. When you shop that way, you look desperate, or at least give the perception that you are, which also means that you don't care what you get back, which means other teams think that Mays is damaged goods, or something is wrong with him.

The e-mail itself was the leak. For whatever reason they wanted all 31 front offices to know Mays was available, so the media leak was completely irrelevant except from a P.R. perspective. There might have been one sucker out there that could have been conned out of a 3rd or 4th round draft pick (where he should have been drafted) but I doubt it. They could still pry a 5th or a 6th rounder from a team desperate for a back-up safety/athlete.

Here you go with the hyperbole again Jimmy, both Alex and Sopoaga have shown flashes, even if you do not want to admit it.. I want to see if the kid can learn to play safety, I don't hate the guy, I just think he was over drafted by a round or two, an opinion I share about Smith. I was shocked when we spent a second rounder on him, I watched him play in all the nationally televised games and kept my eyes open for his youtube stuff because I knew we needed a safety. What I saw was a great athlete with no safety skills. I guess I was spoiled from watching Eric Berry, so I know what a good safety is supposed to look like. He is a project that we spent a second round pick on, like it or not, we either are stuck with him, or have wasted a second rounder. In my opinion, he is a liability on the feild and will not be a starter this year unless about 4 other guys go down. We can however make him a gunner and let him do something constructive like learning to wrap up consistently.

He has definite potential, but has a long road to get to where he wants to be. But no freaking way is he starting safety material this season.
