I would. His salary is not huge. He's excellent at ST's. It's not like he's hurting us. He can still develop possibly or could be tried also at LB. It's just absurd to me that they would give up on a guy after 1 year who was a 2nd round draft pick and probably get nothing or next to nothing in return. How does that benefit us? I just don't get it?

I bet they have a price point and nobody has touched it. That means they will likely keep him and he will demand a trade next year.

this is not a bad thing, with Williams and Whitner ahead of him on the depth chart, we could see a fierce Taylor Mays this season playing with passion and intelligence to show he belongs on the field ...same goes for Reggie Smith, we will be set at safety this season and it could be a strength of the team
Mays is in a dogfight to keep a roster spot, since it appears the team is ready to sign Goldson to a one year contract. I am not sure if R. Smith is injured, nobody seems to know. If Smith is fine, then I can't see the team keeping Mays. They are probably going to have to release him, or take a late round draft choice (6th or 7th) at best.

The depth chart should look something like this:

FS- Whitner, Spillman
SS- Smith/Goldson, Smith/Goldson

If the team kept a fifth safety, which is unlikely, it would probably be a developmental player, like Maragos or Taylor or Jones. I think Williams' chance to make this team completely evaporated the moment Whitner signed.

Then why the heck even get williams? so much for good planning lol. Is spillman really better than him?

As for mays, he's young enough that why can't he be a developmental guy? Undrafted or later round projects are not better investments. Just because he got shopped around doesn't mean they would cut him for nothing.

When they got williams, they didn't have Whitner yet. What if whitner did sign with the bengals? Then getting Williams wouldn't have been the worst move.

Williams was insurance, in case they couldn't sign Goldson or another safety. It is funny to read Vikings' fans thoughts on Williams. They were almost exuberant that he departed.
Who's gonna want Mays right now? They know there's a chance he'll get cut this year or in the next offseason. The Niners probably would have to take a low draft pick at this point. 5th to 7th rounder. Probably trying to hold out for a 4th.?.

Singletary's coaching legacy lives on with the Niners. Stuck with Mays and Rachal, bad neck injury to Heitmann because of the stupid nutcracker drill, and numerous other injuries because of the nutcracker. Thanks singletary!

Lets get rid of Taylor Mays!

As others have said, Mays is worth keeping for ST where his straight line speed and strength can be very useful. If that were the goal, they might keep him instead of Kristick or some other LB who would otherwise be a ST guy. In any case, he certainly looks like a draft mistake, at least at the level he was drafted. Right now his best value as a ST guy is commensurate with a 5th round choice or thereabouts. Hence, a trade for a 5th rounder might be the best they could do.

not only that, but they didnt have goldson either.

madieu williams is the first man on def cut imo. I think even if he looks better than mays, mays will make it by default.

please keep mays 49er FO give him another year to show us something.

With the logjam at safety it would be better to get something rather than nothing for Taylor. With Williams, Goldson, Smith and Whitner plus Spillman Mays won't see the field this year unless it is on special teams. However, I would see how he responds in the preseason games maybe he will sink or swim, I hope swim because it sucks to see such a high pick wasted in less than a year. Some players practice horrible, he has a hell of a lot of talent, but can't cover to save his life.

No one will offer us anything for Mays. We will probably keep him as a special teams ace and he could probably be a very good one.

Mays hasn't even had a chance to show us anything. And one of the few times he saw the field for us last year produced one of the more spectacular (special teams) touchdowns we had in the entire year.

He's basically getting the shaft because he's not one of Baalke's guys...which is beyond lame. We should be developing him....he has the talent to warrant that.

Mays doesn't make that play for us against Atlanta, and we aren't even in that game for Clements to fumble away.
how much is Mays making? anybody knows.
If he's still on the block, he might not be traded until the end of preseason (when other teams suffer injuries/see what Mays has this year).
