I think one develops "instincts" partly WITH playing time.. When you learn the tendencies of what works and what doesn't, your instinctual actions and reactions begin to change.

Poor instincts should downgrade a player, but these things can be honed somewhat. Sometimes a player just doesn't get it, though, and that's when it's time to cut ties.

I might agree if he came from some 2nd tier college program. But after four years at USC, which under Carroll was as close to NFL coaching as one could get without being in the league, I would expect his instincts to be closer to NFL ready than they currently seem to be.

lulz. i had the hook on it too for $50. sad part is that the only jersey i have is this old gore replica, and i was gonna pick it over a willis, vd, gore, crabtree, etc to try and be different at games lol

Yeah, the only other jersey's i have is Gore's 07 pro bowl jersey (authentic) and a Crabtree home (replica) lol.

But i definately need to get me a Willis jersey too, it's been too long lol.

I have new respect for Mays. He could've easily sat out practice, had a angry outburst about being notified about being used as trade bait, gone to the media to voice is displeasure (i.e. see Barlow), etc. But his efforts in practice knocking down the ball and still playing hard shows he wants to improve and knows it's a business without taking it personally. Then, he has a humble media interview afterwards. I wouldn't mind if he stayed on as ST player exclusively while seeing the field in garbage time.

Also, remember when he was picking the brain of coaches after being drafted? Singletary or the DB Coach was saying it was annoying, but they liked his enthusiasm to learn and better himself. I hope he improves, hate to see a 2nd rd pick go to waste.

He commented that he was not getting any direct coaching to improve after staying another year rather than entering the draft. Perhaps that was overstatement, but maybe he wasn't developed properly...or he was using this as an excuse for dropping out of the first round.

from what analysts are saying his problem isn't mental its physical he just physically doesn't have the agility in his hips to play safety in the open field.

I think he should try to put on a few pounds and convert to a pass rushing OLB he seems more suited for that. If he can't do that then I don't know if he'll ever be anything other than a Special Teams player.

How many athletic Herman Monsters do you know? I don't know any and don't think that he fits that description. Mays does not only seem fast but very athletic as well. He needs playing time and coaching so that he can expand his skills.

I'm sorry. I understand your point but I am not buying it. You don't play football for as long as he has and not have instincts. Moreover, if that was the case, then Alex should never be on the field. Mays needs to learn their scheme and it needs to be flexible enough to maximize his skills.

well you may not buy it, but it's the case. Instincts can be developed to a degree. But you are born with those base instincts, if you dont have those instincts then how do you develop. That'd be cool if we indeed land a lucrative deal for Mays with the Vikings to possibly get Toby Gerhart. -Stick him at fullback, and we're rollin' sky-high!

Do people not realize that pro coaches and scouts do miss on players every now and then? You don't give up on Mays that fast. I don't care what you want to say about his instincts or lack thereof, a guy with that kind of athletic ability needs to hang around for a bit. Give him a couple years and see if he can develop. Don't jump to conclusions and state absolutes like he'll never be able to flip his hips and cover, it's just not in him. Was drafted as a project player and so we need to see if progression can take place. You can possibly lose out on a big time player, and we'd be getting next to nothing in return for it.
