I think Mays can still be good. He wasn't angry at Carroll for not drafting him, he was angry at him because his stayed for another year to get better when he would've been drafted in the top 15, and all year long Carroll gave him no advice or coaching other than "Just keep doing what you're doing." As a result, he stagnated and did not get better, and lost potentially millions of dollars as a result.
Now that he knows his weaknesses, he can focus on correcting them, and has a really good secondary coach to help him. He's shown he has the smarts and the top notch work ethic needed to really improve, so I think the problems he had that we've bashing him for can be erased. If he can learn to work in space and cover, with his athleticism, he could be an all-pro.

I'm upset we aren't trying him at OLB before we try and dump him. Atleast see if the guy has potential.

The same limitations for Safety would likely keep him from being an effective OLB--lack of instinct and inability to move laterally. Straight line speed isn't very useful unless you are a WR, and even then you have to be able to cut and move quickly around DBs.

I wasnt able to catch a few of the games where he started, but did he learn to wrap up and tackle rather than going for the big hit? Cant play LB if he cant wrap up consistently.

He improved but it is still not second nature...good call!

Totally agree. He's showing a lot of maturity. I wish him the best wherever he ends up.

I agree as well and think he could land and do well on a veteran team with a solid set of DBs. If a team has three really good cover guys perhaps Mays can be more useful to knock the heck out of people running over the middle?

Maybe the niners are getting rid of him because of the HGH testing
nah man hes legit they already tested him at the draft
Not for HGH. I thought it was a new part of the CBA.
USC, Brian Cushing, i wouldnt be surprised

Not sure what to make of this. I don't know if the mass email thing is standard.
I didn't want Mays, I was hoping he and Clausen would be gone before we drafted.
Why not let everyone know instead of calling one by one. Lets say 5 teams would be interested in bidding on his services, you can get more that way than if you only guess on which teams might be interested in him and make individual calls.
I think it has the opposite effect.
By sending a mass email that states that we're looking to trade him, it significantly decreases his value. It expressly states that we're looking to get rid of the guy, so there's no "nah...we're better off keeping him than doing that deal" kind of leverage.
Calls/emails to individual teams and making specific trade offers maintains the position that we could keep him. (Giants w/Umeniyora, for example) We took that leverage away from ourselves for no reason.
Not if you have confidence in his value. If you feel confident that the guy has value, you put him up for auction and let people fight over him and drive up the price.
That said, I don't think Mays has that much value.
Trent is handling things his way this yr as being the official GM now. He's done a good job so far and it seems like he moves are getting better and better. Teams were reaching out to the 9ers for Mays so they sent out the mass e-mail to make sure no one else wanted in as well.

Wouldn't we have heard something by now, if we were interested in any of the offers we received from other teams regarding Taylor Mays? It makes no sense to trade him when all you will get in return is complete garbage. Mays is a freak and could turn out to be a good football player. You don't give a project player 1 year to develop, especially one that is 6'3 235 pounds and runs a 4.24. He may suck in space and coverage might not be that great, but it wasn't any worse than mark romans or michael lewis's. He was on par with Goldson in coverage imo, and Mays has lots of room to improve. Terrible move if we trade him. It may come back to haunt us badly.

You already know that they won't get anything for him but he is a beast and too good to trade?
If Fangio thinks he is expendable then he will be. The other thing that may be happening is establishing a value to show him he isn't a starter yet. Who knows!? Must be more to the story than we have seen. Going public seems like a slap down but would they do that for no reason? Stay tuned!

I applaud Mays for being level-headed throughout this ordeal. I suppose it can't be easy knowing that your employer know longer sees your value. While I never saw much in Mays, I do wish him the best.
At least the Panthers chose Clausen ahead of us..

Didn't say he was too good to trade. I said he has a big upside and it's not worth trading away that kind of potential for what you would get for him right now. And of course were not going to get anything better than probably a 3rd round pick right now. He was a second rounder last year and didn't perform up to that status, so yeah I know that were not going to get much for him. Not a smart move at all to have him hit the road after 1 year. Seems like he has a real passion and desire to succeed in this league also. A guy with that kind of athletic ability and determination needs to stick around for more than a year. Unless there is some incident that happened behind the scenes that we don't know about, going separate ways with mays is a huge mistake. Don't give up on a project player like this that fast.

How many athletic Herman Monsters do you know? I don't know any and don't think that he fits that description. Mays does not only seem fast but very athletic as well. He needs playing time and coaching so that he can expand his skills.
