Marty Schottenheimer. Many look at winning Super Bowls as the only measure of success, but fact is he took the Cleveland Browns to 2 AFC title appearances and coached the last consistently good Browns teams.

But it's pretty clear it doesn't work considering how far back I had to go. Teams that need to fire a head coach in season have issues that extend far deeper than the head coach.

Nice pull, but going back nearly 40 years suggests it's not the wisest course of action.

When I see people crying about Shanahan, Lynch or the 49ers in general on here, I look at the Raiders situation, and it makes me realize how ungrateful many of the fans on here are. If not for happenstance, the 49ers would likely be in the same position as the Raiders: stuck in football purgatory with zero aspirations and no hope for the future ala the Jets, Raiders, Browns, etc. I genuinely feel sorry for these fanbases because every year they get excited only to end the season depressed again. Every season they relive the nightmare and the cycle perpetuates.

The 49ers would be in the same exact boat as the Raiders if Jed York landed the man he wanted(Josh McDaniels) in 2017. Imagine the s**t storm that ensues after that failed hiring. It would have kicked off the next chain of catastrophic hires ala Nolan and Singletary to Tomsula. It was a stroke of fate and a blessing that McDaniels turned him down, and the Broncos chose not to hire Shanahan.
