2024 Draft Class: IDL

He may develop into a 3 down player, but currently, I'd expect him to be more of a 2 down guy. He clearly has athleticism and some burst, but the problem is that hea just too damn heavy. The fact that he didn't weigh in at the Senior bowl, and then a few weeks later, weighs in at the combine at 366 tells me he was 380+. In his interview at the combine he said something along the lines of "this is just who I am" when asked about his size and his playing weight. I bet he'd be an absolute freaking beast if he was 30 lbs lighter, and 336 lbs is still a massive NT, but there should be massive concerns about his conditioning and his discipline. Concerns that I doubt the niners overlook.

I don't know if there's major concern. Running 5.2 at 365+ is pretty darn good.

But I agree if you get him a nutrition team that makes him even stronger at say 350, that would be hard to deal with

Being fast and explosive for your size doesn't matter much if you're still slow. If he showed the willingness and discipline to maximize his athletic profile at a more conducive body composition, I'd be pounding the table, but he hasn't shown that. I'm not using the draft capital expected on a primarily 2-down player. Still valuable, but I'll take chances on other roster needs as there is enough precedent to allow doubt to linger over whether is upside is ever actualized. He has given no evidence of a desire to get his weight down, and it might be fair, given the evidence, to assume he struggles just to keep his weight below 370

Only speaking specifically to one item, which was the weight.

Conditioning IDK. I grade Sweat a top 75 guy but I don't think he's as good of a fit for our scheme and I think there's a lot of other guys I'd take over him for sure.

Give me Murphy, Fiske, or Jenkins if we go DT early.
Looking at the players available for NT I think they might go for Tyler Davis in late 3rd or 4th. 6'2" 300lb. I think we need some OL help. I think we have 5 picks in the top 100. So I hope we can get 2 OL, 1 DT, and 2 BPA. CB, WR. JMO.

Bingo. We want a space eater to have on the roster you don't need to spend a high pick for that.
Fiske might have the medical red flag on him apparently…sucks if true

If we could get him later, I'd do it easily. Wilson is a hospital ward. Phoenix mentioned how awful his history was. He's an A+++ athlete and player but you can't trust he'll be healthy.

Some team may risk it late third, but I couldn't go higher than 4.

Also in that article, another one of my favorite late round guys may fly up the boards if it's true he runs 4.3 (Bub Means). These guys gotta stop making themselves out of reach, I am losing it over here 😭
Was just checking out DT Maason Smith (LSU) vs. Wisconsin OL (C Bortolini).

They had to double him a lot. Bortolini owned him early, but he started taking over later on, and he destroyed their LG and RG one on one several times. Not a bad prospect. Last time I reviewed him I wasn't super impressed, but 2nd review, there's a lot to work with I think. 3-4 rounder, maybe even late 2. Some really good reps in this game.

He has really good flashes before his injury. If he can consistently keep his pads down and build up his lower body, he has a chance to be something.
Zierlein just put out his 2nd mock and had SF taking Jer'Zhan Newton. I know people will lose their mind because he's a DT (but one of the best defensive players in the draft imo)…dude is a complete animal. I can't see how he drops that far.

Just draft good players please.

I don't love drafting IDL in the first, but I wouldn't hate it as long as he's BPA. I'll check him out for sure. Just based off those clips, he looks like another natural 3 technique(kind of looks like Hargrave lol). Drafting an IDL would be okay since AA/Hargrave are old. They need to infuse the interior with youth.

That said, if they don't add another IDL thru FA or the draft whose strength is stopping the run, man, they're asking for s**tty run defense again in 2024. They were able to mask it all regular season, but it was there the whole time and reared it's ugly ass head in the playoffs.

There's no way in any universe that Newton falls to 31. There aren't 30 other teams stupid enough to pass and let him get to us.

If he dropped there probably were a bunch of QB/OT/CB/WR taken, unlikely but it could happen and any OTs the Niners wanted are likely gone already
Sweat is awesome. He's a tush push buster and pocket collapser. He's exactly what we need on the interior. 366 lbs is great. That is exactly what you want against the Eagles tush push.

I want him too. Would be a huge help in my opinion. Against the run and free up guys on the line to rush the QB.
