Harold Landry Boston College DE/OLB

Both of those guys make us better as well. Landry is my #1 guy for us but Fitz and Ward would make the secondary better.

QUESTION.....Do you guys see Landry as a LEO for our defense or as a SAM? I know he could do either and may very well do so, but if you had to pick one position for him in our D where would you put him? I'm leaning towards the SAM spot where he could be our Bruce Irvin/Vic Beasley...

I think i mentioned it earlier but IMO he's at least starting out playing SAM in base then comes down to Leo in pass rush situations. Exactly how Vic Beasley plays for Atlanta.

I think it's interesting how we can look at the same player and visualize him doing different things. 😉I'm gonna have to disagree with genus here. I do not see Landry as a force/flat defender (SAM). I see him as a "get in the backfield and blow the play up as fast as possible" kind of guy. To me this is a Leo.

Either way. It be a nice problem to have.

I agree. I think it more so depends on what Saleh/Shany want to do in base.

Are we still looking to ensure we're dominant against the run? Then putting someone like Sully at Leo or even Armstead make more sense while playing Harold at SAM.

But certainly if Harold comes in and shows he's not getting pushed around at the line and can keep contain and hold his ground in the running game then hell yeah...throw him out there as a full time Leo. If Avril could do it then I'm sure Harold can as well.

Got it. Thanks!

Where do you play Fitz in our secondary?

I think as a rookie you put him at end and play him on passing downs. You want his focus to be on getting better as a pass rusher and try to develop him to be a DE, much like the Falcons did with Beasley in his rookie year. You re-evaluate after year one as to whether he should continue to be developed at end or moved to SAM in base and edge rusher in sub packages.

As a rookie. Probably neither. He'll be a nickel rusher.
Landry fills our need at LEO to a T. Unless we draft a LB due to fosters legal concerns, this guy has to be the pick. We can always pick up big athletic DBs later in the draft ie the Hawks with Sherman and chancellor

Yeah that's a solid point. Use him for what we urgently need and don't overwhelm or tire him out...similar to what we did with Aldon I guess.

Where do you play Fitz in our secondary?

I think he could either play slot corner or win the FS job. I just don't think it gives us the best bang for the buck because I think Williams is at least ok at slot corner and we have a pretty good position battle with Colbert and Ward at FS already so while adding him makes us better it also doesn't plug up some glaring holes that we have.

Dwight Freeney was not a very good run defender...you think the Colts regret drafting him?

I don't always agree with PFF grades but I know people live and die by them.

Landry even this year when he was playing with a bum ankle and being constantly double teamed was graded out as a 7.5 run stop percentage. Chubb was 3rd with 11.0 as a comparison. Davenport was at 8.2 and Sweat was at 8.1. For some additional reference here is what PFF had to say about him heading into his senior season

Landry led all returning draft eligible defenders with 69 total pressures last season for a pass-rush productivity (PRP) of 17.5, which is No. 1 among draft eligible 4-3 defensive ends. Landry's best ability last year was winning on the outside, where 40 of his 69 total pressures came (58 percent). PRP measures pressure created on a per snap basis with weighting towards sacks.

It wasn't just in the pass game where Landry excelled, with 36 stops in run defense, that number ranked him No. 2 among returning ACC edge defenders. Landry showed he can have a presence in the run game as well.Landry returns for his senior season as the highest graded FBS edge defender in college football with an overall PFF grade of 89.7. He also returns with a pass rushing grade of 90.2 which ranks No. 1 among returning FBS edge defenders.

I think most of us here wanted to play him similar to what Atlanta does with Beasley, which is he basically plays Sam on base and comes down at Leo in obvious pass rush downs.

If he shows to be a well rounded player who won't be weak vs the run if he plays on the line in base then he'll be moved to full time Leo for all downs.

Saw those comments yesterday and didn't feel like talking about it. But Landry is a solid run defender. Only seen him struggle one game early with missed tackles, but he cleaned it up half way through and was shutting everything down.

Then when he got burned by NDs QB on a read option.

Looks like Landry is shrinking. They had him at 6'3" - now, he's listed at 6'2".
