Goff is an elite prospect. Kessler is a late Day 2 QB. I don't see the arm or poise from Kessler.
Fine by me, I'd rather take a QB that knows how take snaps from under center and call his own audibles on the seoncd day. Rather than spend a 1st round pick on a QB who comes from a gimmick system. If Goff falls to the 2nd then of course it's a no-brainer, but give me an elite Offensive Tackle in the 1st or a stud pass rusher in the top 10 if the 9ers are headed for that position. We've picked two QB's that came from gimmick offenses, let's try and take one this time that has some Pro Style experience, and I could give a s*** if that QB is mobile I want a damn pocket passer!!!
but Goff IS a pocket passer, and a great one at that with footwork that allows him to make up for a s**tty O-line to keep plays alive and make plays, making throws even when he knows he's about to get drilled. Why can't you bring him in and adapt the offense to his strengths while you continue to teach/coach him into being an under center QB? Isn't that what Mariota is getting in Tennessee?
By the way, I'm far from joining the wagon that wants a QB drafted in round 1 but I do think Goff is the best prospect right now.
Well like I said I would absolutely love to have Goff as a 49er if he fell to the 2nd and who knows never say never. I just would hope that Baalke addresses the O-line or pass rush or even ILB. QB shouldn't be a discussion in the 1st round I just don't think it should with all the problems to the right side of the O-line and lack of pressure the defense gets on a QB.
Getting back to Goff's footwork, I just don't see enough of it with him lining up in the Pistol and Shotgun, you take a two step drop and a hitch and he get's the ball out. In the NFL he's gonna need to configure his 3, 5 and 7 step drops with a receivers route something I have never seen from him of course. But from what I see from gimmick QB's is that they look so uncomfortable thinking about their footwork and mechanics while taking snaps from under center that they seem to worry about it more than reading a defense-See: Colin Kapernick and 2005-2007 Alex Smith they just don't look comfortable. Whereas a QB coming outta college from a Pro System who is accustomed to taking snaps from under center and making NFL reads and passes will pretty much will have to worry about the speed of the game rather than the basics of taking snaps from under center. If the 49ers are gonna take a QB that needs time to learn I prefer they take one in the other rounds besides the 1st.
