I will use Jimmy Garoppolo as an example, a guy I wanted to draft, a legit QB prospect who went in the 2nd. Pending on the guy we want plus having to make sure we secure the pick, the chances are we will have to take someone in the 1st. With the way things are going, is looking more and more like a 4-12 season, I think we should be in a pretty good position to take a top QB pick.

If we pick high enough to choose a blue chip QB, by all means.

I'm not too fond of any of the QBs who will likely be in this draft tho. Maybe someone establishes himself as a stud during the process.

I'd be cool with a QB in the 2nd rd. Would not want to trade up in the 1st under any circumstances. Don't want a RGIII type of trade that ends up rebuilding another team (STL) lol.

I agree, definitely no trading up. I have faith in the 9ers to pull out with 2-4 wins this season to position us well in the draft. LOL.

I really hope a QB or two emerge as possible franchise QBs. Either we draft them or trade back and continue to rebuild with more pick.

IMO, we need pass rushers (OLB and DE), Oline help, and a CB. Our offense isn't going to be dominant, but we have decent balance. It's sufficient to win games with a solid defense.

On offense we had to fix the Oline. B Thomas isn't a guard. He gets pushed around on the interior. He needs to be groomed as a swing tackle or our RT. Davis should come back to fix our RT situation. Hopefully Heitman comes back and all we need is a RG through FA or the draft.

On defense, we need to invest some early picks there. I love what the Rams did on their front seven. We need to follow the mold and continue drafting up front. Armstead could be a good selection for us, but we need guys that can get to the QB. A good pass rush can mask a poor secondary and we don't have very good CBs. Harold should be groomed to take Brooks' job, hopefully. Dial is a good run stuffer but a pass rusher would really help on pass downs. I wonder if Dockett is avail?

If we draft another Saferty early I'll find another team to cheer for. Instead of drafting a safety (Ward) to play CB, how about we draft actual CBs. It took Culliver around 3 years to convert. Ward is going to need that time as well.

To be honest, I almost cannot think of a single position that are not in need.

Starting from QB, OL, DL, OLB, DB, ILB or even RB.

You know what does that mean? The saying that the 9ers' roster is filled with talents is grossly exaggerated. Is either that or the coaching is totally hopeless or both.
With our luck, this will shape up just like 2005 when we had the first pick.

Alex Smith was the "Consensus" Best QB available (don't be blinded by 20/20 hindsight. At the time, most analysts thought he was better than AR. The way he fell through the draft all the way to GB confirms it), but not really worth the first overall pick. There was no other sure fire stud worthy of another Team trading up for, so we were stuck.

2016 may shape up to be the same scenario.

Hoping that at least there is a sure fire prospect that other Teams would want to trade for if that's the way the Draft shakes out (No QB at the top of the Draft)

May be we can do right this time.

I remember it being 50/50 on who was better. Rodgers had the slight edge, but was he just a system guy? Alex's mobility was a huge plus for some. Either way, it's such a gamble.

We need to reload on defense and patch up the Oline, IMO. Trent has a lot of work to do. He hired this coaching staff and that's the first obstacle. If we continue this path and win like 4 games, does he fire Tomsula? Without coaching stability you can't win. Players are drafted to fit a specific role within a scheme. That can't work when the scheme keeps changing. You're left with Jimmy Ward and a DC that would rather have LBs cover the slot than a nickel corner.
all of the sudden this thread got lit but most posts aren't even about Goff. Ok.
I have concerns about Goff's arm strength and am not completely sold on any of the guys coming out this year. Would love to wait until 2017 and look closely at Watson.

Goff's arm strength is fine. Watson is not a good NFL prospect.

By people in the know Rogers was well above Smith. Sadly the 49ers weren't in the know.

Your reasoning is compelling. Thanks for that.

Goff is a franchise QB and the best one to come out of college in years. I'm not sure when got so lost on evaluating QBs but accuracy, pocket presence, and poise are staples of all the great ones. Goff has all three in spades.

I like Conor Cook or Goff. Preferably Cook, he looks more gifted but i will settle for the one who is smarter and makes better pocket decisions.
