Really the only players that could of made an immediate impact this year were a 2nd cb ilb and maybe a guard.

However
the guard was gone at 5
The ilbs may not of been a priority in the second or third to start over wilhoite
Peters could of been the second cb IF the coaches let him

Besides that, nobody could of started bc the niners have a lot of talent at many many positions.

Hell the Seahawks got NO starters either sooooo that's what good rosters do, have little openings for starters

And we also lost a ton of players.

2 ILBs, 2 CBs(Not sold on Brock sorry), lost Gore, lost McDonald, maybe JSmith. Are roster is NOT as deep as it once was, we needed some impact players from day 1, I don't see any in this draft.

There isn't a bigger critic of Baalke than myself. The Zone crucified me last year when I attacked Baalke's drafts. His draft last year sucked IMO, and I said so immediately afterwards. His draft in 2012 obviously was a complete joke.

However, I loved this draft. Sure, I would have made some different moves here and there, but if you would have told me that we would end up with Armstead, Harold and Tartt in the first three rounds I would have given him an A.

Maddog, your criticism of Armstead is misplaced and the future will prove that out. Contrary to your argument that we have a lot of needs and aging vets, we actually don't have one legitimate "need" on the team despite the exodus this offseason.

Usually, I am at the other end of this phrase, but the Zone seriously needs to chill out. We are getting back to what made us great-defense. Harold will be a serious third down rusher at first, which we could seriously use. Armstead and Carradine are the future, and they are a bright future. If Dorsey goes back to NG I think Armstead starting sooner rather than later is not out of the question. Docket is primarily an interior pass rusher and will likely play more in nickel situations.

It seems that Brooks' going back to ILB is more likely than we thought. Baalke alluded to as much, so Wheeler, Brooks, Wilhoite, Bowman is solid. Brock, Ward, Cook, Johnson, Acker, Reaser and Wright isn't bad either.

I would look to serious attention to the OL and WR positions next year.

Last year draft may be the best in the nfl.
We got a good safety and maybe a solid nickle in ward
We got the best rb in hyde
We got the best center in Martin
We got one of the best guards in Thomas
We got the best ilb in years in Borland
We got a very good cb that did well in the nickle in d Johnson
We got a solid playmaker in slot and returner in Ellington
We got the rookie with the most sacks ROTATING w brooks in lynch
We got the best fb in the draft
We got a solid DL

Are you kidding? This last draft is ridiculously good by Balke. Set us up for the future.

This years draft will help set us up for the future at De, S, WR, OLB, P, possibly te

And the Front Office had a play in that, had Jed just stood behind the guy he hired in 2011 we may have had a better record, but there were too much rumbling in the media, and it's obvious someone was a mole inside the locker room and/or front office. Don't just blame Injuries, and Harbs and his staff on the 8-8 season.
Thanks MD - It seems to me Baalke went into this determined to make "reaches". Why?

(This is not apologizing for Baalke - I am really disappointed in all the project picks. But when you know someone is not a complete idiot, I try to understand what happened).

To some extent, it seemed like all this draft didn't have full round value throughout the round so picking 15 kept leaving a talent pool that was more on par with the next round of talent. As an example, by they time we picked in the 2nd round, all the best 2nd talent was gone - except for ILB Perryman - there wasn't anything really worth a 2nd. Given that fact, there was little trade utility this draft - no one would trade back seeing the lack of talent, and nobody would trade up to 15, lol. In that light, it almost seemed like Baalke saw little value in some picks and almost in frustration took some fliers - Pinnion, Davis, Bell -- all strike me a fliers. Round 6 and 7 are fliers for everyone.

HOWEVER, my irritation and disappointment (and many fans I think) is that if you are going to take a flier - why not take it on a need for god's sake. Borland was a flier - thank god we had him last year. As you point out, Tre McBride was on the board and seemed like a natural flier on a need. Pinnion is a ridiculous pick - not even close to the best punter in the draft.

I give Baalke's management of this draft a D.

I thought I was tripping about what happened. I'm glad there are others, especially qualified dudes like maddogg who feel the same way.

That was a weird draft. Almost like it was chaos.

Only problem is Brooks and Wilhoite can't cover their a$$ with both hands. 2 down ILB's with minimal ability in coverage as an inside backer

Jaquiski Tartt says . I think the 2 down ILBs will only play 2 downs, getting replaced by whomever wins the competition b/w Moody and Tartt.
Hope the opponents cooperate and pass only on 3rd down.

It's by personnel group. Willhoite can't cover a slot WR, but he's fine against most TEs. Against receiveing TE who suck at blocking, we'll probably treat them like a WR and go nickle, covering them with Tartt or Johnson. It's no like a team is gonna go 4 wide on 1st down and well say "derp-de-derp, it's only first down, so we better stay in our base 3-4," or that a team would go three tight on 3rd and 5 , and we'd say, "obvious passing down; better roll out the dime defense."

Maddog you nailed it. This draft epitomized Baalke's hubris. It's one thing to "stick to your board" but it's another to not recognize full value for your picks - I thought there were numerous reaches and multiple instances when the 49ers could have traded back a full round (if not further) to get their guys - namely Tartt, Bell and Pinion.

I'm not going to give you my full rundown of why I hate the Armstead pick b/c I've already done that multiple times, but just look at this comparison below:

6'6" 294lbs 33.5 inch arms, 5.03 40, 30 inch vert, 111 broad, 7.20 3 cone, 4.19 20 shuttle, 8.5 sacks and 15.0 tackles for a loss
6'7" 292lbs 33 inch arms, 5.10 40, 34 inch vert, 117 broad, 7.57 3 cone, 4.53 20 shuttle, 2.5 sacks and 4.5 tackles for a loss

One is a mid 1st rounder the other is a mid 3rd rounder. One has a motor that runs non-stop, the other has his heart questioned. Can you guys which player is which?

Yes, the 1st one is Henry Anderson from Stanford who is the same size as Armstead but with longer arms and blew away Armstead in every drill at the combine. Not only that, he was 1st team all Pac-12 and actually produced. Can anyone please explain to me how Armstead went about 60 picks ahead of Anderson?

Armstead is 21 with a November birthday and Anderson is 23 with an August birthday. I think NFL GM's are betting on Armstead continuing to develop physically as he matures and he's already more explosive as measured by the vertical and broad jump. These numbers are indicators but not true measures of a player's athletic ability and Armstead is considered more athletic than Anderson with more room for growth. Armstead still seems like a reach at 17 because he doesn't have great length, but I understand why he was taken pretty far ahead of Anderson.
I think we are thinking along the same lines. I'm not a big fan of this draft. I would grade it a little better then you have . I Like your draft better. I hope Armstead develops into a great player. The big head scratcher was drafting a punter ?????? Tratt I have never seen play so I have Nothing.

I can see Bell as a serviceable TE if he can get his ears wet this season. But I can't help but to think that with millers problems I can see him possibly being converted into a Fullback. He's a beast on the ground.

It's either going to be genius or a colossal failure, I see no middle ground.
Baalke seems to be the opposite of Kerr and Co. Kerr be like, I'll take all of the best players and coaches I can get. Baalke is like, I'll take all of the guys no one else wants (tenting fingers) and dominate, as I am the smartest guy in the room. He has arrogant drafts.
Great analysis MadDog! The only positive about this draft, is that I'm hoping York sees that Baalke is not up to the task and fires him very soon.
