There is a difference between being a raw, but clear 1st round talent and being a guy with a lot of athletic ability, but never played the game of football. To make this clearer, Lawrence Okoye is the equivalent of when Brock Lesnar tried out for the Vikings 10 years ago.

I thought and still think that he has 6th round talent in a 1st round body. I did not want him until at least the 3rd round.

Everyone's entitled to their opinion, but come on. To say he is raw, capable or more, needs coaching up, etc is fair. But to call him a 6th round talent? Basically you are saying that he's a borderline NFL player. A practice squad candidate with a good camp.

Go back and look at the 2008 draft... not just the 49ers. Count the busts in the first round. It was a massacre.

True, but that doesn't make Arik Armstead a 6th round pick.

Is there a Z?

This is without doubt THE worst draft since Baalke took power. Is time for a new GM.
This was a draft from a GM that feels very secure in his job. Lots of projects and no immediate returns on investment.
I think Balke was showing off by drafting players that we didn't need and that most people never heard of or considered taking! We drafted 2 TEs so we have 8 On our roster now. More than likely neither will make the team. Or they will be sent to the practice squad. We aren't cutting Davis or McDonald so they more than likely won't make the team! The safety in round 2 I haven't seen his name anywhere except for reports that the earliest he would go was the 4th round. We skipped CB, wr and ILB which were supposed to be our biggest needs. He skipped guard until the end of the draft. Whenever Balke drafts a guy no one heard of early they are bust! Aka Jenkins and Mcdonald

A GM that feels very secured with his job?! Are you serious? Win a Super Bowl first before you feel secured. Is 2015 folks, we are hosting the Super Bowl, he should have got some impact players to give us a chance, instead we have ended up with a bunch of scrubs who may or may not develop.
A

Addressed every single need save for QB, CB & NT. But we have 3 NT's on the roster right now, QB's #1 and #2 are more than set and CB is going to be a fierce and deep battle anyhow. The WR based on the UDFA's will be fierce as well. Then we picked up other key players as UDFA's. We also started with 9 picks and ended with 10 and added 2 more for 2016. Finally, every single player we drafted are big boys and not only fit needs now but tomorrow and almost all will be part of offensive and defensive packages and allowed to grow into starter roles next year after the veterans leave (Justin, Bethea, Brooks, Vernon, Boldin, Lee, Pears, etc.). We also added two RZ targets, better ST's and competition and depth at key positions like G, T, RB, etc.). Equally important we found three very hard-to-find positions in the 4-tech DE in the 3-4 defense, the X WR spot (big-bodied playmaker outside) and hybrid ILB/SS position (Kam Chancellor role) to remain flexible in our schemes.

This is an A draft for now and tomorrow.

2015 Draft Picks:
1 (15/15) DE Arik Armstead - Traded back to 17 and acquired 4 (18/117) in 2015 and Charger's 5th in 2016
2 (14/46) SS/ILB Jaquiski Tartt
3 (15/79) OLB Eli Harold
4 (14/114) To Buffalo for Stevie Johnson
4 (18/117) From San Diego TE Blake Bell
4 (27/127) From Denver RB Mike Davis
4 (33/132) Compensatory WR DeAndre Smelter
5 (15/151) - Traded back to the 5th (29/165) and acquired the Colt's 7th (27/244)
5 (29/165) P/PK Bradley Pinion
6 (14/189) T Ian Silberman
7 (27/244) From Indianapolis G Trenton Brown
7 (29/246) From Indianapolis - Traded for Dallas' 6th in 2016
7 (37/254) Compensatory H-Back Rory 'Busta' Anderson

Injuries have a funny way of changing roster dynamics, so there's always that factor. That said, I think Bell makes the team giving them 3 solid TEs barring injury. IMO, Celek and Carrier are lesser talents and the added competition will weed them out. Rory Anderson will likely get few reps in training camp and make the practice squad this year, giving him a chance to study the playbook, work on his strength/conditioning and compete for a spot in 2016 with Bell and McDonald.

Completely Agree sir. Balke BLEW IT. He needs termination papers.

"I"

It is entirely too early to assign a grade when we have not seen the result of these selections. But it is safe say some won't make it, while others will. Let's just cheer them and see what happens.

More likely Carrier and Celek don't make the team. VD, McDonald and Bell, Anderson on the practice squad.

Evidently the team didn't seem too concerned about CB and ILB the way some fans were, they have a lot of guys at CB, its going to be a good competition, at ILB, reportedly the 49ers weren't very high on any of the top ILB's in this draft.

Don't get the obsession with ILB. Bowman is healthy, Wilhoite is working on a contract extension as we speak, and the scheme is changing so that Jaquiski Tartt (ILB/SS) is on the field instead of Wilhoite on passing downs; we'll be playing more nickel/dime. How much more veteran depth do we need at ILB with Philip Wheeler, Desmond Bishop & Shayne Skov plus Nick Moody & Nick Bellore? Then we just added Marcus Rush OLB/ILB - 6'2" 247 4.68 who I believe is going to be tried out at ILB as well. Skov is finally healthy and has worked to compete there as well.

Was a rookie ILB from this group really going to come in and win a job over Wilhoite and be the next Willis? Of course not...that would make him a high 1st rounder. Maybe next year.

Arik Armstead - D = Major risk for a pick at #17, without a great upside. Seems soft. High likelihood of bust.
Whisky Tartt - C+ = Good player but reached for pick too early. Should have traded back. (reach)
Eli Harold - B+ = Good player. OLB wasn't a need, so only B+
Blake Bell - C+ = Good player, but might be too early, probably would have lasted until late rd 4-5 (reach)
Mike Davis - B = Good player
DeAndre Smelter - B+ = Good pick, but it seems likely would have been available in rd 5 (reach)
Punter - F = Wasted pick (reach)
Ian Silberman - F = Wasted pick (reach)
Trenton Brown - B = Good pick in rd 7
Rory Anderson - B = Athletic, but bad hands

Overall Grade: C
I have never seen Jaquiski Tartt play so I know nothing about him,
I'm not a big Arik Armstead fan however I am hoping for the best. I've seen him play he is ok not bad not great. he can get better.
I have no idea why they drafted a punter other then to save money.
I'm surprised they didn't draft an ILB.
I wish they would have gone OL a little earlier.
I'm glad they drafted a TE even 2 TE.
I will give them a B- or C+
in 3 years we will know better as to how they did.
Especially with our udfa class, I thought baalke did a nice job. The only 2 picks I didn't understand were tartt and pinion.....thought we could have gotten a CB or another linebacker...especially since Andy lee isn't really showing sings of decline or regression...

Other than that. Bell, Davis, smelter, armstead, Harold...very nice pickups. My favorite though, is busta Anderson. He looks like a stud, I'm excited about that.
