49ers Draft Grade

The people who got way too obsessed with drafting receivers may never get that, I saw some people advocating for 3 WR's with like like the first 4 or 5 picks...and then they get upset when reality doesn't mesh with fantasy. This is not going to be a "high octane" offense, its still going to be ball control, run the football, run the football, take your shots off of playaction, play rugged, physical defense, hit the other guys harder than they hit you, line up and punch the other team in the mouth, that's just how it is going to go. If you look at the picks, Baalke added a lot of BIG, PHYSICAL players, lots of guys with mean temperaments, that is how this team will continue to be structured.
You know, what's funny is that a lot of people are complaining that we're drafting raw, "project"-type players.

Many of those same people are the ones that are year-after-year clamoring for the extremely raw receiver prospects. You know, the 6'4",4.4 40-yard "matchup nightmares". There are like 5-6 of them every draft that are available every year (e.g. Stephen Hill).

C+ for this weekend. Won't see the impact right away. Couple of serious reaches IMO and a lot of development ahead before we see any exceptional results.

You beat me to it. Posts like that really discredit the poster. Lawrence Okoye and Armstead? Did anyone not have Arik Armstead going in the1st round? I'm curious as to what his lowest projection. There is a difference between being a raw, but clear 1st round talent and being a guy with a lot of athletic ability, but never played the game of football. To make this clearer, Lawrence Okoye is the equivalent of when Brock Lesnar tried out for the Vikings 10 years ago.

I thought and still think that he has 6th round talent in a 1st round body. I did not want him until at least the 3rd round.

Everyone's entitled to their opinion, but come on. To say he is raw, capable or more, needs coaching up, etc is fair. But to call him a 6th round talent? Basically you are saying that he's a borderline NFL player. A practice squad candidate with a good camp.

Go back and look at the 2008 draft... not just the 49ers. Count the busts in the first round. It was a massacre.

QFT. 2008 1st round was absolutely brutal.

I actually meant 2009... which is somehow even worse.

Building for the future, but it just reaffirms the idea that this season is going to hinge on Kap and his growth. Other than him, nothing from this draft gains ground against the rest of the NFC West (except maybe at ST and front seven depth).

It's going to hinge on Hyde and his growth just as much. We're going to run the football A LOT this season.

Damn, you're right lol. Crazy, 2 straight years where the 1st round was garbage.

Last year we were 25th in points per game with about 19. I don't see how this draft increased that number. Maybe the coaching changes can give us an extra 8 points a game.
I liked the draft. I'll give it a B-. Lots of exciting, high-upside guys. I never get worked up reading about players that were a "reach", because every team values players differently. All it takes is the suspicion that one of the other 31 teams will draft your guy to justify taking him earlier than he "should" have gone.

This. Thank you.

Just having a legitimate deep threat at WR changes everything, not having to trot out 3 possession receivers game in and game out, a hopefully healthy OL, VD in a contract year, McDonald, Patton and Ellington actually being allowed to play, Hyde, Davis, Hunter and Bush at RB....I think the offense is capable of doing a lot better. The biggest issue last season was the OL, Davis being dinged up all season, Boone coming in out of sorts, Kilgore going down with a season ending injury. That made everything far worse.

True.

Exactly. He's building a bully with massive players on the inside, two huge/athletic TEs, a big/physical safety and a big/physical WR. The more you look at what Baalke did here, the more you have to love it.

Just by looking at the coaching staff you can see that this isn't going to be a finesse team with guys like Tomsula, Sparano and his Parcells background, Tim Lewis, a long time coach with the Steelers, Mangini with the Patriots back when they played head-thumping defense, a lot of guys with smash and crash credentials. If anything with Harbaugh gone, Baalke might be giving in even more to his Parcells roots. A big, scary, physical defense that plays with bad intentions, that is what I'm expecting to see from the 49ers in the near future.

Absolutely agree and wish more people could see this.

Even our new punter is a bully

For sure... I was super excited about our receivers last year, but they really did have redundant skillsets. I think Vernon getting hurt really exacerbated that too, because he would've been our "stretch the field" guy. Things are looking very good this year.

On paper, our offense looks really good. I always feel a little naive saying that, because every Spring/Spring optimism is sky-high for fans of every team.

Or the great Margus Hunt.
