Tomsula also said he was fine with the DL. Baalke said that Justin's decision on retiring wasn't relevant to who they'd pick. I didn't want WR, WR, WR. But so far the team hasn' t picked a WR who will likely play this year. Some of us hoped the team would be more likely to have a winning record next season. Do you remember the losses to the Rams and Raiders?
When S. Johnson and B. Lloyd were signed, webzoners celebrated. I pointed out that the team had gotten no better with them, because they didn't improve the quality of the starters. T. Smith is barely if at all an improvement over Crabtree. Again, I point out that these draft picks and acquisitions so far do not improve the chances of the team to have a winning record.
Tomsula also said they wanted to run the ball, as did Baalke, hand in hand with that is a strong defense. There's no way that it should have been a surprise to any 49ers fan that the 49ers were going DL early considering that Justin Smith is retired or retiring soon, Dockett is 34 and coming off a serious injury, both Dorsey and Williams are coming off of injuries and are on short term contracts and McDonald is gone. I fully expected DL to be within the first few picks and I never thought that they'd take a WR in the 1st unless a guy like Kevin White fell to them for some odd reason, beyond that any rookie WR would have been behind Boldin and Smith on the depart chart at minimum, not to mention Patton and Ellington who Baalke especially seems to believe in.
I think overall this team will have better depth and be able to play more situational football on defense, utilize their personnel to best effect, they are better set for the next season...and the season after that and the one after that.
