Really? I don't see it. WIlliams is balling, Dorsey will be back soon, and can dominate at NT or DE. We lose Cowboy soon, but Dial looks GOOD whenever he's in. I think Tank will be like MacDonald, who did very little while he transitioned from 4-3 to 3-4, then blew up in his 3rd year. Coaches will know better than me. I just don't see DL being that pressing. We only use 2 DL on most of our plays, anyway.

The only way I think they need a DL is if they go after a top notch NT. Other than that they have depth and talent.

1st Team: Smith/Williams/McDonald

2nd Team: Dobbs/Dorsey/Jerod-Eddie

3rd Team: Dial/Carradin

And in the wings:

Okoye/Purcell/Ramsey

Boldin's signed through next year so no reason we wouldn't keep him. I think we could go into the season with Boldin,Johnson, Ellington and Patton... maybe Lloyd aswell and still be ok. At this point is it really a lack of talent or a lack of play calling, execution, ol and kap's play. I would be fine with getting a wr in the 1st but ideally we need to start getting more out of our talent, developing guys better, playing better and executing better.

As for DL I think we would be ok even without McDonald.... maybe Dial/Williams, Dorsey/Williams, Smith/Carradine but it wouldn't hurt to have more depth and more competition for McDonald's spot and Smith's spot when he leaves. I think what we need is a pass rushing DL. We got plenty of guys who can stop the run; we need someone close to Smith in his peak who can give us consistent pressure. That or get it from the OLB and without Smith we haven't got much. Lynch should start getting more sacks, who knows how long Brooks will be with us at 9 mil a year. I could see us drafting another OLB high; that or Lemonier will have to gain some weight and learn some new moves. We know what we have in Skuta; he might be back after this year (FA). Back to DL Dobbs, TJE are FA's and I prefer we move on from them and upgrade over them. They haven't shown me anything this year to make them worth keeping. Purcell, Okoye haven't shown me they could play on the 1st team and do anymore than Dobbs or TJE. Ramsey is a question mark. I'll take another 1st/2nd rounder to compete with Carradine/Dial for DE over Dobbs, TJE, Okoye or Ramsey.

Like I said even if we lose/move on from Crabtree and McDonald (maybe Brooks too) we would still be fine. I think with this draft we are in position to go BPA at a number of positions I just see WR or DL being the most likely. Maybe CB but CB hasn't been our problem we are the #4 ranked pass defense I believe with little pass rush. That's without Brock and then we will be adding Reaser and Acker. We haven't even been able to use Cook that much even though he has played well when in there. Ward's the down spot of that group but he should get better each week. So maybe CB isn't that big of a need. My biggest worries: pass protection for OL, pass rush, and backup QB. So however it plays out I'm fine with it. WR, DL, OL, Backup QB, CB, S, OLB, RB, etc. Just as long as we hit on the picks and continue to get younger, cheaper and hopefully better.

I say BPA all through the draft (minus QB of course)

I would say O-line is the biggest priority for sure, but do we spend a 1st round pick on shut who might not start? (Boone, Martin, Thomas, Looney, where would they start? Not at tackle since Davis and Staley are studs)

I'd like to see a dominant #1 WR, preferably at least 6'3, who can lead our WR corps for years to come. None of this 5'9, 5'10 speed receiver crap. Our coaches don't use them, so why bother? Possession is our game, so we may as well go big of we're going receiver.

A good RB prospect couldn't hurt either. If there's an elite NT or 3-4 DE then I'd go with them first. Build the lines on both sides of the ball and you'll build dynasties

Agree for the most part, but taking a playmaker is always a great decision. I'm thinking of an AJ Green type of guy...tall, fast, strong and great hands. But I also agree with you if they have a shot at a playmaking DL or any other postion. The great thing is the team is so loaded they don't have to reach or give away the farm to bring in a must have guy.

The OL is a quandry to me because I think it is built for power running and if they want better pass protection they need to have more agility/quickness. When I see Boone, Davis or Iupati beaten it is almost always a case of them not moving quickly enough to get in front of the rusher. Staley is the only guy I believe is a really great all around lineman. Can these other guys develop more? I guess...but sometimes it's a matter of size/balance that can't be learned.
Defensive lineman. You can never have enough of them b/c it's so hard to figure out who will play well and who will be a bust. . McDonald is getting old and Cowboy already is old. Dorsey isn't a spring chicken either. We have no idea what we have in Dial and Carradine. TJE and Dobbs are career back ups. Time to bolster the d line.

If we have an honest play at Sammie Coates or DeVante Parker, I'd make that a priority. We need speed on the outside, and the staff seems unwilling to put a pure speed guy on the field, so we need an every down WR who is also a burner. Coates drops some balls, but he is physical and fast, and he blocks hard all game. Parker supposedly greatly improved his speed and explosion, but I'm a little scared of a broken bone in the foot (Crab?). I'd really like to get Jalen Strong if he drops, as well, because we will need our next Q soon.

Wrath,
I'm with you on this. The team, particularly Kap, needs a guy who gets separation. The power run game calls for the complement of a deep threat. The two capabilities feed off one another. Finding a true #1 WR is the first need. Trade up, trade current players, whatever it takes to secure a true #1.

I jumped on the Coates bandwagon last year, I really thought we would have no shot at him in the draft. He is having a down year but he could plug into this offense really nicely.

This. We have to be able to pass block as well as run block. Our o-line is very spotty right now

Which spot on the Oline would you draft?

Not sure if I would draft one very high. Plug in Thomas & Martin after letting Iupati walk & let those guys battle it out with Kilgore, Looney & Boone to improve the o-line pass protection for Kaepernick

Cooper and Coates are likely to be gone in the upper half of the first round but who knows? There are so many big receivers this year I may be happy with a number of guys...even someone like Green-Beckham if his head doesn't explode. Nine out of the first ten WRs listed on CBS's prospect list are over 6'0"...so there should be some WRs in the first two or three rounds that have size. Now...if they have speed and hands!

Parker supposedly greatly increased his speed through plyometric training, but I am not convinced that it is showing up. He could be a heck of a value if he's there in the 2nd. Coates could fall past Cooper, DGB, White, maybe Montgomery, and maybe even that ex-TE monster from Mich State. That could definitely put him in range for us to take him. If not, maybe DGB or White make it down to us. Too much talent in this draft at WR for us to not have an option.

when you look at our DL, I think these guys are more built for the 4-3 scheme..

DE - Aldon Smith / Lemonier

DT - Glenn Dorsey / Jerrod Eddie

DT - Ian Williams / Dobbs

DE - Clueless Tank / Ruthless Lynch
BPA BPA BPA. Probably will be DL or OLB. Hopefully a passrusher or DB.
I hope they keep building up the OL and DL, all else will fall into place with those positions set (QB too obviously but Kap is our future), next pressing need I would say big play WR/TE player or secondary depth

I like this as a principle, but I think we're looking pretty good on both lines for the future. A #1 WR (Every down, size, speed, hands, competitive drive, blocking, instincts) guy would change this offense more than another lineman, IMO. Next year's starters appear to be on the roster already, and that group already looks better than this group (Staley, Looney/Martin/Thomas, Kilgore/Martin, Boone/Looney/Thomas/Martin, Davis) That's a talented, deep, and potentially devastating line.
