We typically give him guys who didn't make it on other teams, or late round picks/UDFAs. I'd like to give Tomsula another player with first round talent like Tank Carradine to work with. Tuitt would have been a nice pick in round 2, imho.
2. I still think its more likely that Crabtree stays rather than goes. But we do need a receiver. Just a guy who can flat out fly down the field with the type of speed that defenses will fear. Ellington? Vernon? A little bit SJ? Another speedy WR would be ok but I don't see a lack of speed at WR.
3. I understand why the 49ers got Blaine Gabbert and I honestly hope it works out, if for nothing else that we don't waste a draft pick on him and his two million dollar salary. Looking at the Jaguars, you almost wish we got Chad Henne instead. He seems like the ideal longterm backup. Oh well. Lesson learned and perhaps we will spend a 3rd round to 5th round pick on a guy to develop. I would even go for a QB in round 2, if needed. Investing a day 2 pick once every 4 years in order to get a cheap backup-QB should be an alternative for us...or a potential starter (Kap will turn 27 in November).
4. Yes, yes, yes. Dahl has to go. Getting a rookie safety to replace him will be good on so many levels. We'd have better talent, a potential core special teamer, and a cheap salary. Might not be a bad idea to go as high as the second round. Fine
5. I actually think we are ok. We have Shane Skov on the practice squad and Borland coming up. No issue if we invest a late pick or land another UDFA, but I wouldn't consider ILB a high priority until we see how close to form NaVorro Bowman is. I mean you cannot simply replace an all-pro like Bowman but we simply don't have anyone who comes even CLOSE to him. Borland is the only candidate, imho. Wilhoite is too slow, Moody seems to be a ST-player only, Skov is too slow. Willis and Bowman are paid very good. Imho, there are several reasons to go for another ILB unless Borland, Wilhoite or Borland shows us some special value.
6. Let's keep it going. Get a speed back that will shut their mouths and make the best of the few opportunities they will receive. Yep
7. It was only one kick. We'll see how he looks the rest of the season. I'm in favor of replacing him only because of salary. The only thing is, there are no sure things with kickers. Didn't the last two (Caleb Sturgis and I can't remember the name of the other guy), not look so hot? I also think we are too dependent upon our kickers because they are so automatic. Perhaps we'll be more determined to put up 6 instead of going for 3 when we get to the redzone if we had a rookie kicker.
Ad 5) again:
I told another story during the mock draft "process" but now I think I was dead wrong on this issue. Though, our FO is far more intelligent than me and recognized this issue--->Borland-pick.
Kendricks, ILB from UCLA, perhaps?
2) My whole thought process behind that draft was what the team will look like after 2016. We certainly don't need another Boldin/Crabtree/Patton type. When I say speed at receiver, I'm talking more top end speed. Vernon Davis has it, but I want it at the receiver position as well. I don't know how Robert Herron is doing so far, but he would've fit the bill. I won't name Brandon Cooks because you'd have to spend a first on a guy like that. But getting a player that can fly out fly down the field and force defenses to roll coverage in that direction opens things underneath for everyone else. We also will have an opening because Boldin is likely gone when his deal runs out in 2015.
5) I think Wilhoite leaves in free agency. I'm hoping we can retain Dan Skuta who I believe did see some snaps at ILB in 2013. Skov is too slow, but he can make up for that deficiency with his instincts and hitting the classroom learning how to diagnose plays. If he makes the team next year, he's the backups backup and a special teamer. I could see us using a pick there, but I wouldn't call it high need unless Bowman doesn't look that good when he returns.
As it stands, I believe we only have one pick in each of the first three rounds, and the way I see it, DE, QB, and S are the way to go.

Key Free Agents by offseason:
2015: ($8.1M over the cap)
Gore, Hunter, Crabtree, Iupati, Skuta, and Culliver
2016: ($39.32M under the cap)
Boldin, V.Davis, Boone, Looney, J.Martin, J.Smith, R.McDonald, Williams, and A.Smith
2017: ($75.749M under the cap)
Lattimore, Stevie, Patton, Vance, Tank, Dial, Lemonier, Willis, and Reid(We hold a team option for a 5th year)
2018: ($121.821M under the cap)
Hyde, Miller, Millard, Ellington, Kilgore, M.Martin, B.Thomas, Brooks, Lynch, Borland, Brock, D.Johnson, Reaser, Acker, Bethea, and Ward(Team holds a 5th year option)
2019: ($173.625M under the cap)
Bowman, and Lee
2020: ($168.6M under the cap)
Staley, and A.Davis
2021: (No money tied up in 2021 yet)
Kap
Projected cap limits by year:
15- $140M
16- $150M
17- $160M
18- $170M
19- $180M
20- $190M
21- $200M
As you can see we have cap room for the future after 2015, but actually we have the least cap room in 2015-2017 according to OverTheCap.com(Well bottom 3 teams)
Needs IMO:
2nd QB- Needs to be drafted, developed as Kap's backup. Wanted Murray, but didn't happen
3rd RB if Gore retires or isn't brought back
#1 WR if Crabs leaves, definitely another WR either way, since Lloyd won't be back if he doesn't contribute.
3rd TE- Need one, Carrier, and Celek stink. Nelson could fill the role as LS/3rd TE if we wanted him to.
OL- We have Kilgore, M.Martin, Boone, B.Thomas, Looney, Staley, A.Davis, J.Martin signed for 2015 that are key O-Lineman, but we could use more depth, especially if Jonathan Martin doesn't pan out, not looking like it won't, he looks good so far. Wouldn't mind extension in 2015 when allowed. (I can see in 2015 our 7 Active OL being, LT-Staley-LG-Thomas-C-Kilgore-RG-Boone-RT-Davis and backups M.Martin, and J.Martin, which could make Looney an inactive, but you never know, he may win the LG spot. I hope it's Thomas).
DE- Justin and McDonald are getting older, and Dobbs/TJE both suck. Dial and Tank could be the future, Dorsey may play some DE.
NT- Ian is signed through 2015, If he continues his play, extend him, would be a nice sign. Get a mid rounder at NT, and we are set.
DL could be like this in 2015- Justin-Ian-Dorsey, with Tank, Dial, and a draftee as reserves.
DB- Re-Sign Cully, we have Brock, Reaser, Acker, and Johnson signed, so draft another guy. Ward, Bethea and Reid at Safety. We're set, just need an upgrade over Dahl.

Ok but looking beyond 2016 from the NFL draft 2015-POV is a little bit too far, imho.

Skov is too slow to start at ST, imo. BTW, this guy went undrafted and nobody claimed him. I know, there are late-rounder or even UDFAs who pan out. But still, you undrafted, unclaimed...that tells a lot.

DL in the 1st no doubt. McDonald is average to slightly above average. Williams in average, Dobbs and TJE need to be gone. Dial and Carradine show promise. Minus Justin Smith we have no pass rush from the DL.
Also, OLB is climbing the charts especially if we dont re-sign Dan Skuta. Nobody besides Smith can generate consistent pressure. Brooks is overpaid and inconsistent. I'd like to see Lynch start getting more snaps he could be the future at one spot. Lemonier is like a bigger Manny Lawson, he needs to bulk up 10-15 pounds and stop using the speed rush every play.

pass-rushing OLB is priority no. 1 so far. Even if Lynch rises, I don't trust him.
a very good backup-QB is needed as well. I would seriously take one with our 2nd-rounder.

Doesn't that distinction also apply to Arian Foster? It also applies to TJE and Tramaine Brock. All three guys are on different levels, but it shows that just because a guy is an UDFA doesn't mean he can't be a contributor. We'll see which category of UDFAs Skov falls in next season. If Shayne Skov can make the 53 next year, then that will be a major step. If not, then we can draft another ILB next season.

Stud DE
Another OLB to throw into the rotation behind aldon and lynch....lemon can concentrate on ST
RB, hyde is just now getting road tested and Lattimore cant even get out of the garage
I think iupati is going to leave so depth is needed, they have a kid stashed away on IR so this one isnt major
Rookie qb>>>>> gabbert
If some sort of way they can luck into a game breaking WR and not some niche/package receiver then please for the love of god do it

Skov was waived today...
Just because you have some exceptions to the rule from time to time, it doesn't mean that the MAJORITY of the late-rounders has got a lot of potential as well.

Funny how our team looks loaded, but really, we are a very young team and we need some play makers now.
I often spoke about how we should target a certain defender on the draft, and give up our extra picks.. we are loaded, we don't have time to develope now.. we need to win now... instead, we continue to draft players after players, and replace young players by even younger players..
This 2015 draft, I hope we concentrate and target a DL w/a huge upside, and move up and draft him..
We also need a young QB that will compete.. a young one like what Washington has behind RG3..

Agree for the most part with this! My preference is a playmaker at WR or CB or both. They have young depth at CB so WR would be my #1, with a big strong receiver being preferable. They may have to trade up to get one but perhaps...? CBS has Coates (Auburn--6'1"), Cooper (Alabama--6'2") and Strong (Ariz. St. 6'4") listed in the top 22 prospects. And then there are a half dozen others who may be 1/2nd rounders. Haven't watched them all but Ty Montgomery is one of my favorites--being a Stanford fan!
